swallowing hard ?

eve Nov 01, 2003 01:29 PM

Hi, I have noticed lately my female Gorgo swallowing hard, as if something was stuck in her throat, or it was sore. She has not wanted to eat either.

She is active, alert, looks great, is not losing weight, but swallows very hard, alot. I thought of mouth rot, I have been doing alot of reading, but I have inspected her mouth and it looks very clean and healthy. I see no sores, ulcers, mucus, pus, nothing !

I did notice the other day, she drank her water while soaking and about 10 minutes later, as I was in the reptile room cleaning, I heard her make a gaging sound and she spurted out alittle water she had drank, just a small amount.
Can this swallowing thing be an early symptom of mouth rot??

I'm bewildered, I suppose a vet visit is next, thanks, for any ideas on this,
Eve

I know in Mammals, a sore throat (Gram stain, or strep) is uncomfortable before the throat is enflamed enough for an ameture to see (I do not know how knowlegable you are with herps and infections)
Just a thought, another is if she got a little subtrate in her throat she might be trying to dislodge it(but you probably thought of that also)
if the loss of apetite lasts a while I would try a bit of PediaLamb (what I call LAmb baby food thinned down with Pedialyte and given 3ccs at a time)
that would pass any obstruction as long as the epiglotis (or what passes) is functioning, and would be thick enough for her to cough up if her Trachea is propped open]

Just some stray thoughts just moments before I colapse after a full weekend with the kids
Good luck, and keep up apraised, and yes, a trip to the vet wuld be in order
hope you have one as good as I do (I adore mine)

This is also a symptom I have heard others talk about with a respiratory infection. I would be concerned enough to make a trip to the vet.

I hope all goes well and your gorgo is well again soon. Keep us posted.
