Lost Veiled chameleon outside

cheshireycat Nov 01, 2003 02:29 PM

I have a female Veiled chameleon, Honey, who's a little less than a year old. I keep her outside in a large enclosure and will sometimes take her out to go on a tree and let her catch flies and explore. Anyway, I went to take her out yesterday and opened the cage. I usually open it, go inside for a few minutes, and come out while she's already by the entrance... and that's what I did, except I have way too many things going on and totally forgot.

The cage was outside, but half under cover and it rained most of the day and was really windy. I didn't notice the cage was left open until I went to bring it in late that night (I put her cage in the porch at night) and saw the open part and remembered about it. My boyfriend was there with me and we searched a few hours with flashlights, then I waited until the sun came up and searched again. I kept giving it breaks and then continuing the search to no avail... and she's not in my yard.

I live in Miami and am not worried about the weather. I'm worried about cats, kids, and anything she could eat on the way. She's showing receptive colors and looks (and acts) like she's going to lay eggs soon, so I know that she might show up on the ground, too. However, I'm pretty sure I know what tree she's in. It's a 30-foot or so "Orchid tree" in my neighbor's yard. Other times I had put her on the grass she goes in that direction and I'm pretty sure it's where she ended up, but I can't see well into the tree and wouldn't be able to see her up so high or behind so many leaves, anyway. My neighbors have been alerted to watch out for a chameleon, but I don't know what else to do... I feel like a moron and I really need tips.

Anyway, I know that if Honey feels stressed there's a good chance she'll come up to people. She feels more comfortable with a person outside than alone by far, however, I don't think she'll be very stressed at all in a large and lush tree like that. I'm scared of not finding her, or, worse, her dying.

I'd really appreciate ANY help anyone can offer, and thanks.

Gee, I'm really sorry to hear this! I understand the "too much going on" problem. I'm in NH and today was a balmy 70 degrees (quite warm for the first of NOV!) and I brought Luna out for awhile. She was safely in the crabapple tree - and ate one! I was going to come inside to get my camera, but after hearing the too many "I was just gone for a second" stories on this forum I decided there would be other photo ops! Didn't want to risk it.

As for help...my only suggestion would be to see if you/neighbor has a high ladder. Even if you can't lean it into the tree you think she is in, just get yourself up there. Take a pair of binoculars (borrow a good pair if you don't have any)and scan all around. other trees, the ground, etc. Please let us know if - scratch that... when (I'll be optimistic ) you find her!

Thanks, Lele.... that's exactly what I was thinking! My dad has an AWESOME pair of binoculars, but we think my brother lost them or something I have to find someone else with a pair of good binoculars. However, I do have another option. I'm going to borrow a camcorder with a good zoom and get up on a ladder and try that. I really hope I find her, I'm missing her like one couldn't believe.
