wild garters late in the season!

JMILLR2101 Nov 01, 2003 03:33 PM

I was just walking in the patch of woods behind my apartment today and spotted 2 garters about 3 feet off the ground in a tree. I scared them and they took off, which sucked! They were both healthy looking, but loked as if about to shed. Do they do that this late in the season, and will they come back to the same spot even though I scared them off today? I know that the copperhead I use to watch got tired of me watching him and disappeared will garters do the same?

They go where they can find food and cover. If they have a nice source of food and some cover, then they will most likely stay in the area. Andy

November 1, 2003 I was walking a few steps away from a set up ravine stairs, and there were two large garters in the leaf litter! I quickly picked one, up ... and well it musked me,...lol!

First time being musked by a snake,

Typical Thamnophis. Only thing worse than the musk of a Natricine is the musk of a hognose...although they typically musk and defecate at the same time. Quite nasty. But I can actaully find Thamnophis year round, even on 40° or 50° days. Andy
