How often do you make fruit fly cultures?

rc_racer_007 Nov 01, 2003 06:34 PM

Well how often do you make yours? I started making 4 a week. then I went down to 3 a week. and now im making 3 every two weeks and they seem to be doing just fine.

Im just curious most every site says make one culture per frog each week.

I have been feeding two froglets (probibly 3 months old, i have owned them for close to two months). and i recieved 2 more froglets (probily the same age, they are the same size) this week so i may make 4 cultures instead of 3 now. But i am experiminting with hydei fruit flys now.

BTW, if "hydei" is the correct spelling doens the rule go: "I before E except after C?" :D

I usually set up like 5 cultures every week and a half to 2 weeks for my six frogs. I have learned to stick to this schedule the hard way, more than once i have had food shortages and they are no fun at all.
Hope this helps.

I make 2 hydei cultures every 2 weeks for 2 near-adult frogs (1 big, fat tinc, and a Gray Treefrog that keeps my Cobra Lilly company), and I always have far too many. Additionally, I keep at lest one melanogaster culture in play at all times, since I can count on having another producing culture within 5-7 days in case my hydei production crashes (hydei cultures take 4 weeks from setup to boom for me).

I am not nearly as worried about food shortages, since I also keep flour beetle larvae (easy as can be to culture in large quantities) and springtails to use in a pinch . . . and I know I can always get a new fly culture within 3-5 days if absolutely necessary. These two supplemental forms of food will hold me out until then. Now, if I had 20 frogs like some of these guys . . .

I make about 4 a week, and it is way too much, I may drop back to 3 a week. I've heard of people having problems with making small numbers of cultures every other week. For example say you get a week that crashes will you have enough to feed your frogs for a month?
