how to do safe belly heat

rudedogsurfrat Nov 01, 2003 06:58 PM

I have a friend that almost caused a fire with belly heat. The tubs wore out the plastic.
What are the options? Metal tape? Making a groove?
Can you ad a small piece of wood under the box to lift it a little except where the heat tape is? Kind of like a shim?

There are ways to make Flexwatt safer but I prefer to leave that to MarkG and others who are more experienced and technically skilled in describing it's proper use.

One safe way is to use Ultratherm Under-Tank Heaters available from the Bean Farm.

For even more safety consider putting them in a recessed area, covering them with foil tape, and running a high quality thermostat.

Unlike Flexwat thermostats and/or rheostats are not absolutely necessary with Ultratherms. They would increase the safety, though.

Note that Ultratherms will be more expensive than Flexwatt.
