Time to seperate?

blueta Nov 01, 2003 08:46 PM

I have a pair of veilds about 4 months old, give or take. Anyway, the one that I think is the male has been walking around with his mouth open sometimes. Also he puffs up really big, especially under his chin. Even when he does this he seems to stay green. Sometimes he gets some dark spots and orange on him.The female doesn't seem to mind it and stays light green. He hasn't bitten her either. Is this just him trying to breed with her? Also, I'm not 100% if he is the male. How can you tell at this age? Thanks.

Veiled are sexable at birth (providing you have a magnifying glass). Look for the tarsul spur... a small button on the heel.

If he IS a male, he is trying to impress his cagemate. At this age, it is a good idea to get another cage ready. If it turns out to be a female, most times they can stay together until 6 months if the cage is large enough. The real danger is "food competition" and that can be a disaster. We have seen siblings fight over the same insect - and it can cause damage to tongues; feet; tails; eyes, etc. If your cage is large and there is ample feeders available, chances are you can leave 2 girls together for a bit longer. Just keep a watchful eye.

Hope this helps,

Well it turns out that it's a 1.1 That is the male doing the "encouraging" I made a cage today and now they are seperate. What is the age for breeding veilds? And introduce the female into the males cage? Cooling period etc?? Thanks for any other information.

Veiled can breed as early as 6 months - but it is not recommended. We don't breed the males or females until they are at least 9-10 months old. With smaller veiled (they don't always grow at the same rate), we wait until 1 year.

The female is usually introduced into the male's cage - but depending on the male and his territorial defensiveness, we may choose a neutral environment. We have a few small trees (portable 6ft types) that we use for introductions. If the male is too aggressive to the female in his cage - it would be best to put them together elsewhere.

Veiled chameleons can breed year-round, there is no need of a "cooling" period as with some reptiles. That is not to say that you should breed year-round, of course. After a couple of clutches, we give the females a "resting period".

We strongly suggest that you read as much as you can on these chameleons - their care is much different than many kinds of reptiles. There is much to learn about pre-natal care; post-natal care; egg incubation; hatchling care; etc. The females can have a very short life if not cared for properly.

Good luck,
