Horned Frog burrowing, am I overly paranoid?

needaurita Nov 01, 2003 09:53 PM

Hello all. I recently purchased a juvenile Cranwelli from a reptile show, and he already started to eat within an hour of being in his tank. However, after about 4 hours I noticed he had burrowed into the Bed-A-Beast.

I have read my horned frog book cover to cover twice, and it mentions that you will want to have a shelter for them to hide in. I have always advocated shelters in the past, but I talked to several horned frog owners and they said they weren't necessary, so I skipped it. Could the absense of a shelter cause him to burrow? Keep in mind if you would that he did have to make the 2 hour ride in my mustang and that might have racked his nerves a bit. Tank setup is - 10 gallon with large, shallow water dish, 2 live plants in planting rocks, 2 incandesent lights (red and white) rated at 15 watts, and as I mentioned earlier Bed-A-Beast.

I am probably just paranoid, but should I get a shelter as soon as possible? Thanks.

Eh, my Marcellus never uses his hide. He just likes to sit in the spaghnum or dig a little hole in the Bed-A-Beast. I've never seen him the hide. Of course, I've only had him for about five days, so he just might not have found it yet.

Hmmmm...

Thanks for the info Jester, maybe my guy is just nervous.

PS I named my frog "Ned" just because it is a funny name in general, and even funnier on a frog haha.

This is perfectly natual for a horned frog, they are a sit and wait predator and they dig down so they can wait for food, it makes them feel safer and more camoflaged. Give one dirt and it'll always be buried.
