While we're on the topic of melinus... where are all of these babies coming from??

bmendyk Nov 01, 2003 10:04 PM

Yes, I know that they come from the moloucan islands in indo, but who is hatching them. As was posted earlier, there has only been a couple of individuals to produce them in captivity. Are these babies that we see on every dealer's pricelist "CAPTIVE BRED", "CAPTIVE HATCHED", or just plain wild caught. Most people are advertising them as captive bred, but I simply have not heard of anybody producing any this year, let alone the dozens that have been available over the past couple of months. Are eggs being wild-collected over in indo, and then incubated? I am just curious, because it seems that recently, there has been a great influx of these little guys into the market. Anybody know anything about them or their origins??? I was led to believe that hatching the eggs was the obstacle that most people were experiencing....

Kamuran is captive breeding Melinus at his farm in Indo, along with Bloods, Chondros, Timors, and more.

they are currently hatching close to 200 baby Melinus a year, and that is where all the different dealers and wholesalers are getting the animals.

they use indoor/outdoor cages for the monitors (they have a black screen on them in the photos), and they have had great success all around. check out the link for pics to their facility...

Im confused because when I viewed their current availability list, they make no mention of CBB. There were approx. 52 species total, with approx. 8 marked (CH), and 1 or 2 marked (WC). Do they use the term CH to mean CBB? Some of the ones you mentioned were not marked at all. Just thought I would ask you because you seem pretty familiar with them. Who am I? Ya know?

Thanks Robyn,
Michelle

Kamuran runs a whole different type of business, and for the wholesalers he sells to, he doesn't usually even bother to mark wc, cb, or anything at all. he doesn't deal with the public, and those terms are not that important to the wholesalers, just price and size : )

Thanks for sharing the pictures of Bushmaster's setup, quite impressive. I bought a pair of ornate uros from him and they were awesome animals, exactly as he described.
