paprika vs. herptivite

axelkid Nov 01, 2003 10:46 PM

I have a citronella which is doing very well but I have noticed that the color has turned to more of a creamy yellow than golden yellow. I supplement once-twice a week with herptivite which supposedly has beta carotene in it. Would supplementing with paprika have any added benefit at all? And while I'm asking, can I use regular store bought paprika or do I have to order special stuff?

Thanks!

Ken

A lot of people use paprika including myself, whether or not it works is quite subjective but I am beginning to think it has some effect. The store bought stuff is rather expensive, I prefer to order online and just dump the stuff into my fruit fly medium. Call it, 'gut loading' if you like.

Another note: I'm not sure who else uses herptavite, but I would recommend switching to repcal or dondrocare.

Herptivite is made by the same company that makes Rep-Cal. In fact, it's meant to be mixed with Rep-Cal, as Rep-Cal is strictly calcium (with or without D3) and Herptivite is the rest of the vitamins.

My bad, I was thinking of the one with the gecko on the front.

It is Reptivite that has the pic of the Jackson;s chameleon on the front of it. According to Patrick Nabor's website... it doesn;t have sufficient calcium in it, and has been a likely culprit in calcium deficiencies in dendrobatids. I personally like Miner-All 1.

Yup, that's the one I was thinking of. I'm not much of a Miner-all fan though. I read thier web site and they put a lot of effort into telling me how bad other products are (in very unfounded ways) but didn't tell me squat about thier product other than it was made by a single guy to get healthier lizards. Not the kind of information I'm looking for when researching vitamin dust.

Dendrocare appears pretty good and everyone seems to like it. Also, it is supposed to be a very fine powder. However I prefer repcal because of the nice long list of vitamins. I just don't want to miss any yummy trace elements.
