Male or female? Help needed

Nakor May 30, 2003 02:29 AM

Servus everybody,

I am going to get an adult male Varanus acanthurus after searching a long time. But I am not sure if my monitor really is a female. It was born in 11/01 and is pretty small.

I'd be happy for any help.

Thanks a lot from Bavaria / Germany

Nakor

looks like a male to me. however with odatria it is fairly easy to touch them and know. males if you touch them the bumps don't really budge. the females area is soft even if it appears bumpy. and lastly but not always correct and so i may be wrong, males have spurs (and yes sometimes females do to, they are just smaller). i would bet on a male. i guess i have had enough of them now though that i just look at the monitor (the whole monitor, not just that area) and say its a female or its a male. males look different and females look different.

Just to be certain. You mean, a look at the whole monitor makes it easier for you to judge if it is a male or a female then to have a look on the part of the body I have postet.
So I'll put another picture of the acanthurus. Maybe you are now sure.
The breeder I got the animal from thought it to be a female. But this has been half a year ago and she didn't look very closely.

But thanks a lot for your help.

P.S.: Some other picture can be found on www.acanthurus.org

Are you the person who set up that site for Ackies??? I LOVE you site!! That is one of the most beautiful cage setups I have ever seen for Ackies. My boyfriend and I were in awe of your setup. We recently bought our first Ackies, she is female and an angel. We were looking for sites that talked about Ackies and I stumbled on yours. I have taken some German, and got the gist of what you were talking about.

Remember, this only from a pic, but that looks all female to me. Both the tail base pic and the whole body pic. Good luck F

for sure is to have your animal x-rayed. Do Not have it probed. You can do some serious damage to a monitor by probing it. But the only other thing that I have to say to that is do you plan on breeding? If not what does the sex of the monitor really matter?
Good luck.

Hy Christine,

isn't breeding the thing the whole hobby boils down to? I mean,
it is just fantastic to vitness the whole process from mating to the moment you have the little lizards in your hand.

But concerning your reply: I don't want to do things like x-ray etc. That's why I am posting here.

Greetings from Munich,

Nakor
