New To Leopard Geckos

ByRandom Nov 02, 2003 01:01 AM

Okay, well, I'm not really that new to Leopard Geckos. I've had my two for about a year. I bought them around Christmas time 2002 from a local reptile shop. At first, I thought people on the message boards and such that I read were crazy. But now that I'm a Gecko owner myself, I can see how addicting it can be.

My name is Josh, and I'm a 16 year old Junior in High School. I've been interested in reptiles all of my life, but these are the best reptiles I've owned. They are pictured below, give me some feed back.

Hahaha, very cool and welcome aboard(Are you new to the forum?). Yes, leos are VERY addicting.. I'm also a junior in high school, but I'm 17. I have two leopard geckos(Ron a hypo tang and Raine an Albino), although I'd like to have about a million more lol. Your geckos are so adorable by the way! Again, welcome and I'll talk to you later.

Yeah, this is my first post on the board, but I've been reading it for a few weeks. I felt that I should stop living through other people's lives and their BEAUTIFUL geckos, and post some pictures of my own and behold the envy in their eyes. Hahaha.

I didn't think that they were that wonderful after looking at the other people's geckos. I was planning on going to the Dallas Reptile Expo at the Arlington Convention Center. But Nooo! My dad had to work, I was going to purchase at least 3 more geckos.
Soon, I'm going to make a custom "Reptarium" out of wood/glass. Too complicated to explain, but when I build it I'll post some pictures.

Lol, well that's cool. I don't know if its your sand or what, but do your leos have a reddish tint to them? Anyway, your in Texas? I'm in the ghetto(no kidding), lol, the east side of McKinney.

ByRandom Nov 02, 2003 01:42 AM

It's not sand, it's this weird stuff from this place that I bought them. It's called... Well, I don't remember the brand name but it is ground up Coconut bark. It's pretty harmless to them, seeing as they eat a huge mouthful of it because they can't aim......Stupid things....haha, just kidding. I seriously don't know how they'd survive in the wild.

McKinney? Lol, I've been there a few times. I live in Mesquite just like........"a stones throw" from Dallas.

What I'm really looking for is some Blizzards, and I've talked to this guy who posted an ad on here, and he's going to sale me 1 male and 2 females for $180 shipped. Good deal? And which one goes first in the (number).(number)? (male).(female), or (female).(male)? I.e.

1.2 geckos.....or whatever, lol

TebbyGecko Nov 02, 2003 01:47 AM

Coconut stuff huh? Well.. interesting. Yeah, Mesquite isn't even far from here, geez. Also, I too have been wanting to get some blizzards BADLY. $180 sounds likes a sweet deal to me and yes it is 1.2, lol.

Don't make fun of me, lol. I've always just guessed. Had to figure out so many damn acronyms myself. Just for reading them over and over, I gave them some meanings that I wanted them to have, lol.

Every time I go to the petstore I bought these from, and ask them if they have any Patternless they are like "We sold our last pair yesterday". And I'm like "Call me when you have some in"..Then I come in a few weeks later....Same story, lol.

Anyways! What do you think about my geckos? Lol, my male wouldn't eat the mealworms on a saucer, so I had to use tweezers. And now everytime I'm cleaning out the cage he bites me. I jump so high, I hit the side of the tank and am amazed that I don't break the glass, lol! He's so fixated on eating, stupid fat thing, lol.

TebbyGecko Nov 02, 2003 02:08 AM

Ahh yes, Petstores. O_O

Lol, naw.. both of mine came from PetCo so I should shut-up. Oh, your geckos look great. Your male sounds like my Leo Ron, all she does is eat and eat. I also have the same problem with her over-enthusiam for eating. For example, earlier today I decided to give her a waxies for a little treat and she didn't notice it so I went to move it closer and she just latched onto my finger, lol. So the element of surprise sent my arm soaring out of there, thank god Ron had let go because she could of gotten seriously hurt. I felt stupid after because I didn't even feel it really, lol. Ah well.. I'll probably get used to it eventually. What's your name anyway? Mine is obviously "Britney". Well... legally it's spelt Brittany, but one day my friends decided they wanted to spell it that way so I just use "Brittany" for legal things or whatever. ANYWAY, that was confusing, lol.

Mine name is Josh. Lol, our only little chat thing going on here but it's my thread! SO HA!

Since like 7th grade I used the name "Random Ellis" (my last name being Ellis). And then I developed a website for my geckos last year and it was an angelfire website called "Geckos by Random". That was before I even knew that there were people who sold them online, hence I wouldn't know about Geckos by Design. So...I used the name anyways, lol!

I had bought them to breed them. Did you? But they are being picky, and when I tried to cool them down last year their tails got really thin in a matter of weeks. So, I stopped and started fattening them up with mealworms and crickets. Now, they shouldn't shrivel up so quickly. Lol .

Just incase you didn't notice, I'm very weird/crazy. Lol

TebbyGecko Nov 02, 2003 02:18 AM

Nah man, it's cool.. I'm crazy too lol. I bought my Leo's because I had been wanting to own Leopard Geckos for a really long time and I've been wanting to breed them as well. I didn't know that there was even a show this weekend.. My god.. I am so going.. lol. Alrighty, well I am starting to like drift off to sleep then snap out of it so I better get to bed. Nice meeting you and I'll talk to you later. OH, I'll let you know if I went to the show or not as well. Here's some pictures to leave you with of my Leos. Night!

-Britney

TebbyGecko Nov 02, 2003 02:19 AM

Ron, she's a sweety, but uhh.. Raine he's just psycho. I love em' both though. Night!

ByRandom Nov 02, 2003 02:21 AM

Argh, if you go I'm so going to be mad. I'll take freakin' Grey Hound or something. That makes me sad, lol........

Anyways, good night. And good night to who ever else might be reading this, lol.

TebbyGecko Nov 02, 2003 02:23 AM

Aww, sorry! NIGHT! Here's another of Ron, lol.

ByRandom Nov 02, 2003 02:26 AM

I was just wondering if anyone used Roaches to feed their geckos?

Ugh, I hate roaches but you can get them really cheap.

tokay_dude1 Nov 02, 2003 02:47 AM

hey dude! welcom to the boards lol if you really want a nice heathy blizzard the best place to get em are at reptile expose i saw i a few down heretoday for 50 bucks and there were gorgeous and so cheap to and awesome leos you have hope they both have long happy heathy lives with you

ByRandom Nov 02, 2003 03:17 AM

Yeah, I've wanted to go to this Expo but I can't find a ride. My stupid dad has to work. What kind of crap is that?

Haha, thanks. This guy that I found on here said that he could ship me the blizzards "ready to breed" or something like that, lol. That's only like 60 bucks a gecko. Ha, I'd pay the extra 10 dollars not to have to get out to Arlington!

so its harmless because they eat it? I can eat paint thinner but it doesn't make it harmless. If you really want to keep your leo on that, and I don't know why you would anyways since leos don't naturally live anywhere near coconuts or shredded ones at that I'd really recommend feeding from a dish to prevent impaction.

$0.02 for what its worth.

I stopped feeding them crickets because the things are totally annoying when they're not getting eaten. So now I only feed them mealworms with the tweazors. And seeing as I've had them for nearly a year on the stuff, and they've never gotten impacted.....I guess I could call that Exhibit A - Field Research. The breeder/petshop/reptile enthusiast said it was safe for them to injest. So, I'm going by what he says about this particular product because he has used it for the past 3 years and is the only one in Texas liscensed to sell "Nature Zone - Decorative Cage Litter"

From the container:

"Safe attractive ground cover ideal for Reptiles, Birds and Small Animals".

Their Website:

if they licensed him to sell it and they say its safe then it must be
I mean calci-sand says fully digestable on the package and lizards die from it all the time.
Don't believe everything you read on a package, it's marketing. If they said it could impact your animal, nobody would buy it.

if you like it, then by all means use it, I tend to avoid any sort of substrate that can be ingested.
cheers!

Normals will always be one of my favorites. When I survey all the different colors and patterns of my geckos, my normals still hold their own. They look beautiful, and then I feel really happy with what I've got in my collection.

3.2.2 leopard geckos (Rosie, Locke, Lisa, Caesar, Tommy)
and 1 more egg a' cookin'

Tim L. Nov 02, 2003 01:17 PM

Really? Well, they're not my favorite, even though they're cool-looking, but just for my opinion, I think they have too many spots. Since there are so many morphs in existence among leos, it's very hard to decide my favorite ones. I'd say that my favorites would be jungle and carrot tails.

I agree, leos are very addicting. I don't have a leo yet, but I'm already addicted!! HELP!! LOL. You're also in high school? Same here, except that I'm 16.
