Do Caimans' shed?

Shaun6 Nov 02, 2003 03:57 AM

I have a dwarf caiman and it seems to be sheding a few scales on its lower back which are all connected, is this normal? the scales are still attached. i looked all over the internet but cannot find anything on the topic.

They shed in flakes. not like snakes. Bill Moss has posted a pic of what the shedded skin looks like floatin on the water. My lil girl isnt shedding right now, otherwise I'd add my own pic.

Bill Moss? Yeah mine is shedding like 6 or more scales on its back close to its tail.

I'm a little concerned about what you mean when you say "6 scales." Are the entire scales lifting off? I very rarely see anything more than what looks like dander (see "gator shed" photo in linked album), and even when I do, it's never larger than one face of a scale. If six scales are lifting, it may not be shed, but rather some sort of infection or something else causing it. Ususally, you wouldn't even notice the shedding process other than the flakes floating in the water.
