are bell peppers an ok snack?

shortydsm May 30, 2003 03:53 AM

I was eating pieces of red and green bell peppers in front of my ig today & as soon as he saw what I was eating (or at least what color it was) he ran over & tried to take it out of my hands so I gave him a few pieces & he seemed to like it. Does anyone know how much nutrition is in this or if it's an ok snack/treat for an ig? I looked on MKs site & it didnt say anythign about bell peppers.

Yes, they are OK to feed. I don't have all my info with me (at work) so I can't tell you for sure, but I seem to remember that they were mostly water. I have heard various people recommend the red and yellow bell peppers be used to add variety and color to the diet. Igs really seem to LOVE anything that's brightly colored.

Buddy (my ig) for some reason has the HUGEST craving for ice cream, even though I can't feed that to her. It's great. If I even walk into the room holding ice-cream, she literally attacks me and tries to get it! She does the same thing with raspberries, but those I CAN feed her .

I always throw a bell pepper into Tempest's veggie mix when I'm chopping it up, he'll eat a bite or two if they're bigger pieces, but he's a very fussy eater. He only likes greens silly ig, which he gets fresh every day, but veggies I have to chop finely and make sure they're mixed with the greens or he won't eat em. One day, I will get him to eat fruit!!

Strange... Buddy picks out all the veggies first! I chop them pretty small just so she doesn't choke... She seems to like just about everything I feed her! The only thing I've found that she'll turn her nose to is apple (not many igs like it) and endive (dunno why).

Berries are definately her favorite (well, favorite food that she is allowed to eat).

I don't know what Tempest was fed before I got him, but it was heart stopping to try and figure out why - he basically didn't eat for almost a month, and was emaciated when I got him! I would cut long thin strips of peas, carrots, and roll up greens into tubes, grab him and when he opened his mouth to bite me, I'd shove it in, keeping my fingers well back :P When he snapped, he'd close down on the veggie and then swallow it. Not a recommended way of feeding an ig!! LOL

He'll now eat greens, veggies if I shred/food proccessor them and mix them well in, but I still can't get him to believe fruit isn't poison. He will, however, eat ig pellets, he loves them the wierdo. So every day he gets a big plate of greens n veggies, he always has a full bowl of pellets in his cage, he'll actually leave salad to eat pellets the silly boy, and we just keep working on it. He's now quite handleable, he's even come to the pet store a couple of times with me, and no one can believe the change in his attitude or appearance! I need to get some updated photos, he's become so handsome I still can't get him to eat anything from my hands though, he'll eat while I'm there, but only when the doors to his enclosure are closed.
