Mercury vapor bulb question

Rik Nov 02, 2003 12:27 PM

I have been a lurker here for a long time. Good forum. Are all mercury vapor bulbs pretty much the same? I mean, do they all produce UVA and UVB? I have a mercury vapor fixture that I was thinking of putting in my leopard tortoise enclosure. Thanks

They all put out UVA/UVB, but I don't know if they all put out the same amounts--I've been wondering that myself. What I do know is that they don't all put out the same amount of heat/light. I was using a Capture the Sun 100 watt bulb (Big Apple Herp), which put out quite a bit of heat and light (and is a big bulb). It died and I'm waiting for a replacement, so in the meantime I got a ZooMed Powersun 100 watt, which puts out quite a bit less heat and light (and is a smaller bulb, too). Why two 100 watt bulbs would be so different, I don't know, but I'm not an electrical person.

The Capture the Sun bulbs seems to die out pretty frequently. So far, the best two mercury vapor bulbs on the market are the Powersuns and the Active UV. On average, they're about $40 a bulb and I know the Powersun comes with a one year warranty. The cheaper ones (Solar-Brite and some others) put out less uvb than a Reptisun 5.0 would after 4 months of use.
