Mouse Substrate?

eighteenmonther Nov 02, 2003 12:36 PM

Can someone please let me know if compressed aspen pellets and "Tek Fresh"- as it's called ( it's shredded egg carton container material, the gray stuff ) , both used together is acceptable bedding material for large colonies of mice? I'm a bit new to the mouse keeping/breeding scene to be "in the know."

P.S.- does either Tek Fresh and/or aspen pellets have a "shelf life" where it isn't recommended to be used any more after a certain amount of time?

Thanks very much for any info!

John

Not sure about the Tek Fresh stuff but I would use regular shaved aspen instead of the pellets. The aspen shavings are easier to tunnel and form nest out of.

Tek Fresh actually sounds a bit like CareFresh which is the unused pulp before paper pulp is treated with chemicals. Mixing the two is great for mice bedding. I did, however find the CareFresh rather dusty despite it's dust free claims. Unless we both have different deffinitions of what 'dust' is.
