Help, good beginner snake

herpin1579 Nov 02, 2003 02:53 PM

I have kept harmless snakes since I was 4 years old. I am now 14. By harmless I mean non-venomous. I have kept boas, pythons, and tons of colubrids in the past. In fact I was bitten quite a few times by my 7ft boa so pain is not an issue. I have read quite a bit about these mildly venomous snakes and everybody has a different view on their toxicity. I would like a mangrove or prasina to begin with. There is also another issue. What type of venom do these guys posses? I have a medical condition know as ITP. This is where I have low platelets and my blood has trouble clotting. While it is fine now, it does fluctuate.

Is this a serious post...or a joke?

You have no business EVER keeping a venomous snake...with a medical condition like that. It goes beyond foolish.
14 is way too young anyway.

No, its not a joke. The condition I have has gone away except for when I get sick. Like right now I am just as normal as you or anyone else. I wasn't planning on getting a boiga or prasina untill I moved out anyways, which isn't for about another four years.

Also I dont want you to think that I am just some kid who has a ball python or leopard gecko. I know more about herps than you think. I have participated in studies of sistrus catenatus with the DNR. And have kept a wide range of reptiles.

seriously dude..u shouldn't be thinking of venomous snakes at the moment. As your say your condition isn't fully cured. MAybe wait a few years to see how your condition gets. As tame as boigas and prasina's are..they do still ocassionally tag ppl and your condition might play up again once exposed to their venom no matter how mild they are..
and i do respect your extensive knowledge of snakes
keep on herpin dude!~

btw i'm looking for a b.dendrophilia myself

I did not mean to offend (just got thru dealing with a pair of Trolls on another forum)...But at 14 you are nowhere near maturity (on a physical level) and having a condition (whether in remission or whatever) makes your body more vulnerable. Keeping venomous snakes is like having a gun at home without a safety on it. I don't care how much experience you have...very experienced people get bit(I have been bitten). What you have to consider is your body's ability to fight the effects...and that doesn't look good.
You might (if you want to be honest) ask yourself why you want to keep venomous. Most of the snake keepers I know are content to never get involved with those and still enjoy a great deal of satisfaction with all the fascinating species out there. I worked at a zoo and fell in love with Waglers vipers (to answer the obvious question..Why I got started. I was 25).
I have argued on these forums that the keeping of potentially dangerous reptiles should be for adults only. Legally, as a minor, the consequences of any accidents are going to fall on your parents more than you. Who pays for hospital bills or possible lawsuits? Something you really need to think about.
