I Dishonered All Things Holy (Please Respond)

ByRandom Nov 02, 2003 03:31 PM

Okay, so I dishonored our sacred vow. Never buy from PetCo. But hey, they had this beautiful Albino in the cage. And I thought I could fix it.

But what the crap!? They took him out of the cage and he was flinging himself around and stuff trying to get away. They put him in the box and he settled down. Got him home and took him out of the box and he was trying to get away. Then I put him in his new home and left to go outside and sift meal worms out of their box contents to add to some oatmeal and apples for gutload.

Anyways, I come back in and he's flat as a pancake. Just sitting there on the side of the cage. Two legs on the glass and two legs on the substrate. Is this because he was stressed or did they $*&^ up another gecko, or was it something I did? After I held him a while, and put him back in the cage he started moving again.

The only reason I bought him was because the whole lot was 1/2 off, so I only paid like $35 for him.....

Please respond...

Here he is

Hi

Actually he looks pretty health and by the sounds of it, very active. Just keep him quarantined for the right amount of time and keep an eye on his weight, eating and stooling.

I called the guy and [bleep]ed him out because I thought that he had hurt him/her. The box that they put it in is on the bottom, that's a quarter in the middle to show dimensions.

Hi

That looks like one of those baseball card collector size boxe's, the smallest that they make for the hobby I believe.

The petco by me uses longer one's with air holes to where the handles pull together at the top and have there name and store coloration on the box.

That box just wouldn't give the gecko hardly any room to move around in and if they didn't, then they should have put some paper toweling in the box and an air hole. I hope that it wasn't to cold for him were you live for the trip home.

There is nothing wrong with a gecko standing in the tank and putting it's two front feet up on the glass. He is really pretty.

No no no.. He wasn't standing. He was flat on his stomach, which was flat and his ribs seemed to be pressing against his skin and his sides were really hard. His left side feet were presseing against the glass and his right side feet were in the substrate. He wasn't on his hind legs at all. And when I picked him up, he was so rigid that I thought that he had died. Then he conformed to my hand, but never moved. So I put him back in the cage and he wouldn't move until I pushed him a little bit, then he started walking.

Now I have a thick blanket over the cage to make sure that no light gets through. Afterall, they are nocturnal so I figured that this would help him relax.

Hi

Got it. Check and make sure your basking end of the tank is warm enough for him. Also if Petco didn't have it the warmest in the tank, then he may be taking advantage of the nice warmth that you have provided for him. Also remember that he had to share the space that they gave him with so many other little one's and he may be enjoying all that space you have given him.

How cold was it outside when you took him home?.

Take Care, TLB

Hahhaahaha. I live in Texas. It was about 90! Lol.

He wasn't in the basking spot though, he was in the middle of the heat and cold area. I don't know. I think he'll be okay....

He'll prob be fine. Moving and being put in new surroundings is stressful to them. Give him sometime to adjust and dont handle him for a while besides normal daily feeding/cleaning, moistening humid hide etc.

Is he on crushed walnut shell bedding? if so, i would recommend taking him off of that stuff. I once had my geckos on it, but found out it's VERY dangerous if they ingest it. not moving into details, i just recommend you take him off that and put him on paper towels or sand if you choose.. the gecko himself doesn't look sick at all, of course i would quarantine to be sure. good luck with him

It's crushed coconut bark. The place that I got my first two from has all of their Leos and Fat Tails on it. They've ingested more of the substrate than their food! Lol, even though they can't aim worth a crap, I still love them!

I hope he/she is okay!

The one in Mesquite on Towneast.

They were all High Yellows for 69.99 (but 35 because they were half off). I took the only Albino.

I was like "Excuse me? Could you tell be if this one is really an Albino".

And the PetCo guy said "Which one?".......

And I sat there for a second....And then was like..."..Uh....The Albino looking one?"

Great times, lol

Yes... PetCo's leos suck. And I have first hand knowledge, because I WORK THERE. The place they get their leos from is discusting. Apparently it USED to be a quality breeder, but now, it doesn't sell to the public, and as far as I know, only to PetCo. Almost every little baby leo we get in has coccidia.
The first Leo I ever got, was a petco leo. He had some sort of parasite for over 2 years, until I took him to the vet, and she put him on panacur. He has now gone from 20 grams (in July) to 40 some odd grams now. And he is still growing. I also have a itty bitty baby leo, that I took from work, b/c he has a broken leg. He is BEAUTIFUL, but I am going to give him to the lady who's leos guts came out. I just have to fatten him up and get him all big!
Anyway, I think that Buying from petco is fine, unless you want to breed them. You just have to make sure that the one you get is healthy. And don't house it with ANY other leo, EVER! Sad....
