Tank Mates???

Heather Nov 02, 2003 03:49 PM

OK Here's the deal. I have 4 saharans. 2 adult females(Ember and Kindle), 1 adult male (Inferno), and one juvie (Flame). I THOUGHT it was a female but now I'm starting to wonder.... It's starting to get a tiny bit of orange on it's belly after this last shed. Now I have no clue weather it's male or female! I Wanted to see how Inferno would react to the two females since He's been real bad about eatting lately.... So I put Him in with the girls.... and Flame... (Flame lives with the big girls). He IMEDIATELY started wandering around and EATTING!!! I couldn't believe it! So I want to leave him in with the girls.... But now I'm worried about Flame.... I put Flame in Inferno's old house and Inferno with the girls. I heard several times that Males will fight to the death.... And since I'm not sure what Flame is.... I seperated It.... Would it be ok to put It back with the others? Flame Likes basking on top of the other girls . But I don't want Inferno tearing Flame up... Do you think they'd be ok? Or since I'm not sure about Flame's gender, should I just leave It seperate??? I want Inferno to be happy but I also don't want Flame to suffer.... What should I do????

Hi,
I haven't had much experience with keeping uros together, but if it were me I would keep Flame with the females, since he is used to them and they all get along. If he turns out to be a male, you can seperate him if you wish, or you can leave him in the tank to mate with them. If you do put Inferno in with the females, he may get along with them, but then Flame might get lonely since he has been with them. I'm not sure if I would risk having Inferno in with Flame, just in case he is a male. If Flame does turn out to be a female, then you can have all four together in a large cage. Inferno has been by himself, so he should be fine like that for a little while more. I don't know about the eating thing, Inferno may have been trying to somehow "mark" his territory by claiming the food....but that's just a long shot! Let us know what you decide to do.

If I put them all together--I'd watch them VERY carefully. I have four Saharans--one yellow male, one red male, and two "red" females. All are housed together, but the two males were first--purchased at the same time from the same place, etc. They have always been fine together and with the females--acquired later, at different times and are younger than the males. However, last Spring I bought/rescued another yellow juvenile male and my yellow male did not like it one bit. Not that he was overly hostile, but I heard him hiss (I didn't even know they made noise!) so I removed the younger one right away before anything dangerous happened. Now he lives with my nephew's two females and they are all happy together. So, it might work, but just keep your eyes and ears open. Good luck!
