silkworms or roaches?

dubumb Nov 02, 2003 04:25 PM

Hi,
Most people feed their geckos mealworms, superworms, or crickets... But i was wondering if anyone has ever tried silkworms or roaches? All the info i find states that roaches are very nutricious, and there are some kinds that have soft bodies which make digestion easier. I am talking mainly of lobster roaches, since they are a good size for a gecko.. obviously hissers would be too big.

Also, has anyone tried silkworms? I dont know anything about their nutritional value, im just curious anyway...

Thanks for your replies.

hi

a couple days ago, i posted about silk worms - and the helpful people of this website informed me that they are highly nutritional and are one of the best things you can give your leo because of its' high protein content. plus, they have soft bodies... the only thing is they move a little slow and because they're so nutritional, they might not like a lot of it.. so a good variety is best for your leo

Silkworms are possibly the most nutritious food sources available for insectivorous reptiles. They're very easy to raise, but the only negative part about them is that they can grow quite rapidly, and the silkworm of the last larval stage is too large for leos to eat. However, if you want to raise the silkworms, here's the best site to buy them:

Hi

I know that some people feed roaches to Tokay Geckos, but I myself haven't heard of them really being feed to L. Geckos

Cockroaches are really nutritious, but they can climb up the sides of the tank and run really fast.

If you want to let your leo try some, I say go for it. Just let him have a taste of one or two so you know he likes them before you go buy a whole bunch.

Hi

I read this on another web page and thought that I would put it up here FYI.

Japanese scientists say that the cockroach is the only animal on the planet which is inedible?. They're just too disease ridden to be of any safe nutritional value.

They didn't mention if it applied to captive bred cockroaches though.

Take Care, TLB
