Humid Hides

ByRandom Nov 02, 2003 05:21 PM

What can you use for the inside of the humid hide. I can't find any moss or anything around here for a few hides. I've seen big packages for like 20 bucks.... I don't want to buy a lot...

Paper towels work fine. Depending on the Geckos age/size other things could be used. Personally for my adults I use vermiculite and papers towels for hatchlings and juvies.

I'm going to use the container that my Super Meal worms came in. There were a 100 of them and it's about 3-3.5'' tall and about 3'' around for my juvinile albino. Should I use the lid or just keep it open? And do I just want it to be damp or like sopping wet. I know this is really freaking retarded, but I've never used a humid hide...

you want to use the lid but the thing about the superworm container is that it has holes in it. I use like butter or sourcream containers, they work great. Turn it upside down(lid down, cut a opening just large enough enough for the gecko to go in. You dont wont a large door. Now u can take off the top, line it with paper towels or preferred substate and moisten it. Just damp not sitting water like a pool. Be sure the humid hide sits over or under you heat source. Hope this helps.

Thank you. I'll try anything with the little one once he stops spazing out. Don't want to stress him out to much. But, as soon as I can find a butter dish, my adults are going to get their very first humid hide! YAY! Lol

You should keep the lid on the container and cut a 1- 1 1/2 inch hold on the side or lid(I cut one on the side for my geckos until they get older). Also, you want it so be able to squish together in your plam and not be dripping like mad. Just damp, basically and I like to flick some water around the top/sides of the container for added humidity.

if you have a paper towel substrate, extra misted paper towels can be good... don't leave it too damp, just misted

So just moist papertowls (about how many layers?) on the bottom. Or..Top...However you look at it. Yeah, I understand now.

I take one paper towel and fold it in half and then fold it in half again(4 layers) then I take the lid, place it on the towels and cut it out the right size.

I don't use damp paper towels as a substrate in the hide, I just fold up a paper towel (or 1/2 or 1/4 of one, depending on the available space in the hide) & wet it, so it's not a carpet, it's more like a damp couch. LOL. Several of my gex use them as pillows!
