Compact flourescent lighting

tommya98 Nov 02, 2003 05:24 PM

I have a 55 gallon RETF tank and am considering replacing my standard reptiglo 2.0 flourescent bulbs with compact flourscent bulbs to help with my plant growth. Anyone have any suggestions or comments on this idea? Is it beneficial or a waste of money? Thanks in advance for the advise.

I say go with a dedicated plant growth bulb, it WOULD be a waste with a reptile bulb in a nocturnal amphibian tank. Second, make sure you provide lots of hide spots so the frogs can get away from the bright light.

Thanks for the prompt reply...assuming I have plenty of hiding places for the frogs, what temp would you use of a CF bulb? I heard that the most natural is a 5000K, any thoughts anyone? Also, would a single strip be sufficient or should I go with a double strip? I would be using a Coralife fixture and bulb since that is what we sell where I work and I get it at the cost of the store so it will be fairly cheap either way. Any thoughts?

Not an expert in that area, but I can tell you that we use 5000K for our exhibits. I wouldn't know to use one or two bulbs without seeing it. I am sure there are plant forums out there you can ask. I am sure the dart frog forum people would know more.
