You can also bake them in the oven for an hour or so to make sure everything's dead that might be on them. Enjoy!

I wouldnt put them in the oven. They might explode, or atleast, crack up and break. You can boil them, or use bleach.

I've never had rocks break in the oven, actually I baked about 200 lbs today lol
The back seat of my car was covered in rocks and it took 3 loads in the oven
once the silicone dries I'll have some more amazing looking hides and formations for my leos to climb

Explode!? They're not going to explode. Baking is safe for rocks, after all, they were formed by the pressure & heat of the earth.

I've had rocks explode when messing around with bonfires.
word to the wise, set up your firepit before you build the fire lol. I've seen pieces of rock fly pretty far when a rock got heated up too fast by the fire. But most of the time if they do break, it is just a crack.

The main reason a rock will or will not explode when exposed to intense heat, is the amount of water that is inside the rock. Bake a rock straight from a river bed, the water inside it boils and will crack the crack, sometimes more violently then others. If the rock was found out in the desert, and therefore msotly if not all dry, then there should be no problem with cracking while baking, HOWEVER, be sure not to cool them too quickly afterwards, this too will cause them to break, much in the same way as glass cookware will break if cooled too quickly after use. Just thought I'd share some geek knowledge with all of you. Hope it helped.

I did ceramics for many years, and pots would occassionally explode in the kiln not because of moisture, but if they had air bubbles in them. The air expands from the heat, and kablooey. Dpon't know if this happens with rocks but if you can have water in a rock that can't get out, I suppose you can have air too
