Staple foods for youngster RES...frozen brine shrimp?

trinacliff Nov 02, 2003 06:57 PM

Are frozen brine shrimp a staple food for RES or is it more of a treat? The reason I ask is because our small RES's (about 1 1/2" won't eat the Reptomin, and someone suggested frozen shrimp...they love it! Then, I started seeing it referred to as a treat...is this the case?

If so, what are other staple foods for them besides Reptomin? They just won't eat it. I give crickets as treats occasionally, and I've heard to feed romaine lettuce...but what else?

Thanks!

You can different varieties of pellets. ZooMed makes a pellet specifically for hatchlings, and you can order a very good hatchling pellet from Walkabout Farms at http://www.speakeasy.org/~dervish/herpnutrition/catalog.htm

You can try pieces of chopped earthworm and frozen blood worms from the pet store. Green or red leaf lettuce is good. See if you can get some aquatic plants from a pet store or plant nursery. Water hyacinth, water lettuce, and anacharis are good.

Shrimp really should just be a treat.

Yeah shrimp is high in protein and in return will make one unhealthy turtle if fed to them often, tetrafauna also makes a reptomin for babies, basically reptomin broken into smaller pieces with different supplements. Keep trying the broken up reptomin, eventually they will become hungry and eat it.

I tried the Reptomin for about a week...but I got tired of seeing it floating around on the bottom untouched. They won't touch it...even if it's right over their head or right in front of them. A few pieces would dissolve, then I'd try again...all that accomplished was getting my tank disgusting.

So, for now, it's brine shrimp and crickets...lots of protein, so I know I need to find something else that they'll eat that is also good for them.

Any other suggestions?? Thanks so much!
