No more imports out of Africa?

gant77 Nov 02, 2003 07:02 PM

I was getting food for my BP's when I got in a discusion with the owner about the large amount of male they had. She said she heard a rumor that the Government is going to outlaw importing from Africa. She said that was the reason for all the males. People are going out and dumping the males for all the females they can find. Has anyone else heard this rumor?

At the reptile show I was just at there wayyy more males than females and the females were more expensive. I asked one of the breeders why there were so few of females and he said they were alot harder to come by these days. I don't know that there is a new law being put in but the males definately outnumbered females at this show.

I don't know the answer to your question but I was looking at an old National Geographic recently and was reading a twenty-two year old article about when CITES first went into effect. There was a small picture and caption of some seized P. regius from Ghana. They looked like yearlings and they had been confinscated because gold bars were sewn into thier bags. After seizing them it was found that some had been forced to swallow gold bars about as long as a cigarette but considorably wider. The importer was charged with smuggling and cruelty to animals. Perhaps recent similar activity and CITES classification has lead to a change is legislation somewhere?
