How cold is too cold?

BOBAFETT Nov 02, 2003 07:13 PM

I am starting to get a little worried. I have a BRB who is only a few months old, around 30". I have her in a 20gallon long, and shes on cypress mulch. There is a humididity air infuser, and a heat pad on one side. Her humididity stays constantly at 80%or more. Its getting pretty cold where im at, and pretty cold in my animals room. She seems to like to hide under her large water dish, which is cool underneath. Anyhow, the analog thermometer says it is around 65-70 at night. I got her a nighttime bulb and set it up on the warmer side. I went to take her out today, she was buried under the substrate and into the gravel. She was cold, and she just ate the other day. Why is she passing up on warmth, i know the like cooler temps, but thats sorta ridiculous. I took away heat lamp, im just a little confused at this gorgeous little girl.

Dan,
. 65 to 70 for at least some of the time is fine. I kept over 20 of my younger than yearlings at those temps most of the time last winter and they ate and digested fine. You mention that she is hiding under the water bowl. I think "hiding" is the right word. These snakes are nocturnal and like to spend daylight hours hiding in dark small hiding places. Under the water bowl may be the darkest and most secure place she can find.

I thought as much, i just need to be reassured. Anyhow, a lot of people on the forums ignore others, unless they are friends or fellow breeders. Ive noticed that you are an exception, and share your knowledge with everyone. I, and many others appreciate it. I mean, its what the forums are for, for people to ask questions and get knowledgeable answers. On the kingsnake forum, i might as well not ask. Thanks again Jeff, you are a great guy.
