Vpi Snow Ball

Ralph Davis Nov 02, 2003 07:19 PM

Here is a pic I just took of the VPI Snow Ball I produced in 2002 here at RDR. Yes he does have some yellow in him, the yellow is not “patterned” like the Jolliff Snow Ball…..it is more “random” in the VPI Snow Ball……….as he has matured………..he has developed some yellow scales…………and they are totally random………he was born on 8/20/02 and he is white!.........The Snow Ball is the most extreme example of two simple recessive traits combined on a ball python……….crap on the Snow project all you like…………it’s here……….and it’s expensive……….it takes years of work and a ton of luck just to produce your first Snow………sure I have some yellow on my Snow ball……….should I chalk it up as a failure and cut my losses because people are disappointed in it?.........I don’t think so………co-dom has us all in way too much of a hurry$$$$$$$$$$$…………co-dom will be long gone while simple traits will still be around and “un-touched”……….you can breed simple traits together and make the double hets for YEARS and still be unsuccessful at hitting the “1 in 16” snake……..co-dom is great………….but it will become boring and saturated………..but I like “boring and saturated”…………almost as much as I love “spoon feeding” the non-believers……….I can respect anyone’s opinion on what mutation “does it” for them and what mutation “don’t”……….if you think Axanthics suck......great………don’t buy em’……but until you are lucky enough to have a few different types of white snakes in your collection and really get to see “in person” the differences between them all………….I suggest just sitting back and enjoying the show………..as T Barker always tells me………….”It ain’t over till the fat lady sings”………..I don’t know if I’m supposed to take that as a threat or not?................but she’s right….........the ball python “market” is sloppy and unorganized, yet it still grows stronger and bigger every year…….

Now think about this………what would “The Ball Python World” be like with out VPI, NERD, Pete Kahl, The Snake Keeper………….it would be nothing………..there would be nothing at all to be excited about……….who would make the cool new mutations?..........nobody?............because the new people would not have anything to work with in the first place?............piss and moan about the breeders all you want………they ARE the “Market”........

This is just a small rant that isn’t aimed at anyone………….I’ve been asked to post some pics of the VPI Snow Ball………I’ve been asked if I was dead?……so here I am……….I just got back from some killer games of volley-ball……….it was almost 80 degrees here today in Maryland……………

I want to wish everyone GOOD LUCK this season on all of their cool ball Python projects!!.............

And I would like to challenge somebody NEW to rise up in the ball python world this year………get your own “gig” and become one of the “Faces”……………why would I like to see this?.............only because I can’t remember a new name in the biz with a "fesh new" approach since some butt head named Ralph Davis exploded on the scene and kicked everyone’s BUTT!!........but remember.........."get your own gig"........anyone can spend the dough and make the snakes......

Rock On Everyone!!

That is more like it. I do not think NERD has anything that pale period.
I can eat my words that I could agree with it is a snow. Perhaps like in Lucies their might be different types?
Maybe the best one unless someone can match it or beat it. Like I have stated before I am working with all three lines of axanthics. I have a dh snow of VPI. That is the closest I have gotten.
Can you post a picture of the Jolliff snow you have? And your opinion of the snow posted @ VPI.
Thanks Bill for bringing out one picture.
And thanks Ralph for posting.

surpasses my expectations of what a GREAT snow would look like!! He looks fabulous-next to those killer white snakes with blue eyes! I am anxiously awaiting a VPI snow to hatch here-and after seeing that guy I'm pretty sure I'll be delighted to have them in our collection! I am sooooo envious of Ralph's male-he beat me to it big time-but I'm on his heels and I'm not slacking, I'm just taking a different route! Of course now I'm really trying to be the first one to make the lavender snow! I suspect the people who are raising, keeping, and breeding VPI axanthics are pretty happy to have them in their collection after seeing these pictures, I know I am.

also. I got the mom and the siblings. I also want to clarify that I think all of the axanthics are cool-I'm even working on a new one! I love the Jolliff strain-it has a banded pattern that appears to have some genetic basis-we produced our first true het snow Jolliff's last year that are albinos and one is a killer banded one.

The new one has the blackest black in it...here is a pic we have 1.3 of these-
New strain of axanthic.

I am breeding my possible dh snow Jolliff to daughter this year. Looking for snow and his line of axanthics. I can only prove out 2 of the four males.

I have seen your animals in person and they are all GORGEOUS....the PLATTY'S, the snow's, the lucy's, the patternless, the lesser platty's, the genetic stripes.....shall I go on... ...........

Sometimes pictures do an animal no justice and it is unfortunate..... but the pictures you just put out were great and without the phony photoshop crap......I know what your animals look like, there is no bull$hit in those pictures....

But one last thing.....without customers for a product there is no market and the fun ends......so everyone counts in this business, no matter how big or how small.....and as far as I am concerned one of the best people in this business is you and the excitement that you bring to it.....and you not only appreciate your customers, big and small, you are always there for your friends.....so if you are looking for a new "Ralphie", I'm afraid you'll be waiting for a long time.....they broke the mold after you were born......

Renaissance Nov 03, 2003 02:23 PM

They didn't "break the mold" after Ralph was born...

They recycled it and used it to make Smurfs...

They were originally going to make a "Ralph Smurf"...but when was the last time you saw a Smurf with tattoos...???

Ralph Davis Nov 03, 2003 03:04 PM

bloodycats Nov 02, 2003 09:21 PM

Hell, I think the VPI snows should be see-through. I mean if you take all the black and yellow out of a snake it should be transparent. I wanna see some ribs and the insides, not white and "light yellow"!!

Seriously, the snows rock. If they are diappointing I don't see how. We've barely scartched the surface with mutaions at this point. In ten fifteen years then you could tell me what a good snow looks like but how can you now? There aren't enough of them out there to know the range of what they can even look like! People need to have a little more patience, sit back and enjoy the beautiful animals.

It's an exciting time to love BPs. I can't wait to see so many of the new double recessives (too early to think about triples? Even the butter striped corn snake(amel carmel stripe) commands big $$.) True ghosts, albino pieds, striped everything-- wow! Too bad I have only enough money for ghosts and pastels. You'll never hear me complaining about any disappointments, though. I feel lucky just to own my normal and to have access via the net and shows to see those awesome snakes I may never own. Long live the BP market!!

Not knocking the snow balls, just thought we needed a little excitement to the forum! It's come up in conversation on quite a few occasions with different people and I thought it would make a great post.As far as a little excitement, mission accomplished! And when they're bringing in the cash$$$, I really don't think you were too disappointed. As far as seeing new faces, I've been told I have a face for radio! Time to sign off for the night and figure out what new contraversial post I can come up with next! Good luck to all on this years breeding season! Bill Lubak

Native Nov 03, 2003 08:47 AM

Bill, I don't see that you caused much "Controversy" as you keep stating was your intention. What you did was show how little you know about the snow ball or the whole snow ball project. You have a total of 3 or 4 people somewhat agreeing with what you said and then one of them turns their opinion to say it is a snow. Maybe next time you decide to post a topic that is going to cause so much "Controversy" make sure you have the support and back up to go along with it... What a joke....

Rene Montez

Ralph Davis Nov 03, 2003 10:44 AM

I would say that is the way most see it..........Bill...........your a Boner..........you stimulated a topic that you know nothing about..........

Good luck on that IMG project..........

BallBoutique Nov 03, 2003 11:22 AM

So the way I see it that real pale albinos are all snows! like the ones posted on NERD'S site. They should be snows too. They might not be controlled breeding of dh snows but might carry the axanthic gene. Do not think any one knows for sure about the pale albinos.
Can someone describe what a "snow" looks like? Lots of variations claiming to be snow. I would love to know in case I hatch one out. I might be calling something a pale albino when it is a snow. Is the VPI snow posted by Ralph the real snow or does it include the other snow that Ralph calls a snow has on his site? 1 in 16 long shot. Hope more people post pictures of their snows in 2004.
Can Kevin and Dan give some input also?
Just love to see a white and charcoal ball hatch soon. What would one call it?
I openly admit that I am ignorant about the snow project - but I want to learn about it!
That is why I ask and seek answers. I always thought that the axanthics would remove the yellow and have charcoal in its place. Perhaps I may be correct but till it is done I will be consider wrong. It is my theory on this subject just like the thumbnail vision on VPI site of what it should look like.

Thanks to all for for reading!

What are we talking about?

RandyRemington Nov 03, 2003 03:12 PM

IMHO questions are good regardless of support. Sure the better questions are ones that are informed/researched; however if you already knew the subject completely why ask a question. Even the bad blood isn't totally bad as it keeps things interesting as long as it doesn't get too out of hand. When questions come up on such expensive snakes and where personal conflicts are involved some feathers are sure to get ruffled.

I'm always more concerned with the genes than the appearance so to me a "snow ball" is a double homozygous for albino and some sort of axanthic. If it turns out that some pale albinos look like some high yellow snows I still see an important difference in the genes and would only use the term “snow” for one that is homozygous axanthic (or appears to be).

Why do the pale yellow albinos happen? Maybe there is one or more hypoxanthic (reduced yellow) gene out there and those are a combo of that gene and albino. Maybe that gene is subtle enough on it's own so as not to be very noticeable without albino.

Sure a hypoxanthic gene could work it's way into a genetic snow project and cause confusion as to which animals are really snows but I'm confident that the breeders who have claimed to produce snows so far know what they are talking about and that they really have genetic snows (double homozygous albino and axanthic). It will be interesting to see the breeding results as the 6 snows so far mature and the variation in appearance, which might be seen as more snows are produced.

I'm thinking that axanthic should not turn yellow into charcoal but rather remove all or most all yellow and any charcoal that is left should be the black that was there to start with and just got browned out when mixed with the normal yellow.

I wish I knew something about what is going on in the various axanthic and anerythristic genes across snake species. I used to breed corns and it was interesting to see the combinations of the two different types of anerythristic and albino. With the original anerythristic you produced the original "snow" for which the term was coined. The blotches sometimes had a yellow or even pink or greenish tint to them but the striking thing to me was what appeared to be a difference in texture of the white in the pattern elements. It was kind of like the difference between flat and glossy white paint, even though they are both white there is a texture quality that is different. With the second type of anerythristic (type B or charcoal) you tended not to see the texture difference even if you did sometimes still see a little yellow somewhere on the body (yellow might be more detached from the pattern than the yellow in the first anerythristic type). I'm wondering if there might have been totally different mechanisms, perhaps acting in totally different layers or parts of the skin for the two anerythristic types.

Of course all of these corn snake observations might not be relevant for ball pythons where the primary non-black color is yellow and not red. A whole different interesting subject is how much yellow and red might relate to each other between species.

I know I was expecting a little more of the white on white texture difference in the snow ball and less yellow - pretty much just what the VPI projection looked like before we got to see the first snow. However I can't say that I'm all that disappointed, just a little surprised. Maybe some day we will have other types of snow ball and there will be a considerable variation for people to match to their taste. Maybe all of the current snow balls are more like blizzard corns (without the white on white texture contrast).

BillLubak Nov 03, 2003 04:06 PM

Thanks Rick, I would hardly say its something I know little about. Was a perfectly legitimate question reguarding the snows. There are many variations, some look excellent, others are as you say, look like very light albinos. Thats the way it is whith any morph. Some people just interpate things the way they want. It wasn't so much the contraversy as the response the post got, did it not? And as Rick said, it flushed a lot of great pictures out of some awesome animals! Lighten up people, I thought it was a lot of fun. We are all just as excited when someone proves a new morph genetic and all hope to come up with one of our own some day. Am I jelous, hell yeah! marketing a miniture doll of yourself. I think thousands of breeders would buy it and rub its belly for good luck during the breeding season. I even thing Gail would buy 3 of them. One for her and 2 for Nigel! He would certainly have other plans for the 3rd one.

In addition you could include a bonus RD horse shoe so that one could shove up ones ar$$ whilst in the breeding room.

Ralph,
That was an impressive rant! As impressive as you web sight!
I am new and I am looking to make a name for my self in the BP world. I have been keeping high end reef tanks for a few years and although that has nothing to do with breeding and raising snakes. I have grown to love the idea of manipulating nature and producing beautiful quality animals (corals and fish).. I am not interested in BP in a money making sense but for that satisfaction of watch eggs hatch and admiring what pops out. That being said I would like for you to elaborate on a few parts of your rant to help me better understand how to achieve my goal in this hobby..

"get your own “gig” and become one of the “Faces”

.........."get your own gig"........anyone can spend the dough and make the snakes......

..........only because I can’t remember a new name in the biz with a "fresh new" approach since some butt head named Ralph Davis exploded on the scene and kicked everyone’s BUTT!!

Thanks in advance,
A. Corsi

Ralph Davis Nov 03, 2003 03:25 PM

Hi..............I used to have some nice reef tanks in my pet shop years ago..............there is nothing prettier to look at, that's for sure.........lots and lots of work though......

As far as "getting your own gig"..........I want to see someone "crop up" with some pizzaz!!.....a leader............not the same ole price hacking, chronic complaining, morph dissing jealous whinning KS regular.........we need a RUPERT!!!

I love KS..........but it tends to be a spawning ground for jealous non-motivated people to gather and piss on everyone else's stuff.............I used to do the exact some thing years ago..........so I'm talking from plenty of experience here.....

"GIG".........I guess "Fresh" would sum it up...........and no more stupid SLOGANS..............I'm way gulity of that too.........LMAO!
