Beardie with eating/pooping problems

passionflwr Nov 02, 2003 07:22 PM

Hi,
I'm concerned about my 1 yr beardie. About a month ago all he would do is moped around and sleep. So I got one of thoe TRex UV/Heat lamps that are supposed to work wonders. Well it did for about 2 weeks. He was so energetic that I didn't no what to do with him. Lately though he hasn't been eating much and I don't know the last time he pooped. I'm really worried and I don't want to lose him. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bonnie

This is the usual time of year for beardeds to begin their natural slow-down known as brumation. During this period they tend to sleep alot, avoid the heat and lose their appetites. They will sometimes "wake up" for a week or two and behave normally only to go back to sleep for another month. It can be a frightening and confusing time for owners. The various bearded dragon forums are filled with the topic every fall. Dr. Kathryn Tosney from the University of Michigan maintains an excellent site on beardeds and has compiled information on brumation from one of those groups.

Just make sure he's not losing weight through this. If he's getting thin it might be a parasite problem.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?
