Albino African Fat Tail sold as a C.A. Banded??? Petco screwed up again?

wort Nov 02, 2003 08:20 PM

I bought this real nice gecko at petco(mistake) and it was labled as a central american banded gecko. They had two in an enclosure and one appeared albino. I bought it. Well turns out this guy looks alot more like an albino AFT and i dont believe that there are albino CA bandeds. My gecko has an overall pinkish pigment for the skin and has 10 stripes. First stripe is white and runs from cheeks to back of head, and the tiny last ones on the tail are white also. The stripes betweena re more of a light yellow. The problem is that my gefcko appears ti have more strips then the avergae albino AFT gecko... most apear to have on big one near the neck in the middle and at the base of the legs and some on the tail but mine has one at the head and 2 between and a bunch by the tail. Is this just an odd morph of the albino AFT's?? I also looked at some C.A. banded pics they have spots on the head that mine doesnt, and they seem to have 5 fingers on the front legs while mine has 4 and so do albino AFT's, i think :S Please let me know, and correct me if i have something wrong.

I dont think its a AFT by youre descrition. A AFT doesnt have the white band around the back of its head the way you descibed. Thats one way to tell the diff between baby AFT's and Leo's. Leos have the white band AFTs dont. Banded geckos when very young could have the appearence you describe compared to their adult look. Can you post a pic, if its not a Banded I would suspect a Leo before a AFT.

Thank you, I will try to pot a pic but it could be awhile, i dont have a scanner or digital camerea right now. Well anyways this gecko is in a relatively humid tropical terrarium. WIll i have to change the setup if it is a albino leo? It seems to be fattening up and growing well so far.

I used to have a few Western Banded Geckos but I guess I lost all their pics in a hard drive crash this summer. They like Leos like a dry arid condition but I'm not to sure on a CA Banded. I can say this, they look and are mistaken for Leos alot. When I got mine one was a baby and looked just like you descibed. As it got older the bands broke up into spots more like the other two I had. At first they looked like comepletly diff geckos though, so it may very well yet be a CA banded gecko you have. I know theirs members that keep so get a pic and I'm someone can help ID it.

I have seen that picture too and some others... i wasnt just looking at my gecko and thinking "hmmm that might not a be a CA banded" :P. Mine is more pinkish and bright and has no short stripes or dots on its the head. But its till young so i guess ill have to wait.

Subspecies is possibly Coleonyx variegatus bogerti.

I did a search on Google and that is what some web site said it was.

Thanks for clearing that up!

By the way, that is a beautiful gecko

Ok, I can tell you this about Petco. We are NOT able to get albino AFT's. I do the ordering for the store where I work and all petco's get animals from the same place. we are able to get regular AFT's (wc adults), leopard geckos (albino, patternless, normal) and central american geckos. CA banded geckos are highly variable. Take a look at some pics on-line of CA bandeds, texas bandeds, etc. Don't rely on just one site for pics.

Wow, i tink that might be it! Mines still only 3 inches or 2 and a half, so i am not completely sure but really looks similar. Whats the species name again?
