Does anyone only mist with warm water?

trinacliff Nov 02, 2003 08:39 PM

I see this mentioned here and there, and today I warmed up the water a bit before misting...my pygmy chams seemed to enjoy it more (well, obviously). But, I hadn't done it that way before...does anyone only mist with warm water? I'd imagine that it wouldn't be possible with an automated misting system unless you got really high tech.

It definitly much more of a pain in the rear, but if it gets them to drink more, it would probably be worth it.

Just wondering if I've been missing something here.

Lately I've been warming up my water just by storing it in a warm spot, mine's in front of a heat dish I have aimed at my insect rack, so it stays warm all the time. I keep 4 or 5 gallons of good water and just make sure there's always a warm gallon ready. They seem to like warm more, like you said, probably just because it doesn't startle them as much, and I would imagine that rain falling naturally would be warmer than room temp. I don't know the temperature of mine or anything, but even slightly hot water would work, since it cools so fast as mist. I also use the same warm water in the cups I drip them with (the cheapo plastic cup with a pinhole in the bottom method). Seems to work better than when I used room temp water a few months ago.

Kristen,

We ONLY mist with warmed water...
With the hand mister, I put the bottle in the microwave. 3 minutes for a litre. The water is hot, but when misting, it is comfortably warm - about body temp. I warm the water for the 2 gallon sprayer too.

In our automated misting and dripping system, hubby uses aquarium heaters to warm the water in the 55 gal reservoir.

We always tell folks to use WARM water... personally, we couldn't handle cold showers!!!!!!!! hehehehehee

Thanks to all of you for the input...I'm going to try to only use warm water from now on. It seems to make them so much happier...as for the ones that are at my father's house, well, I think they're just going to have to live with it as I think it would be far fetched to think that I could now tell my father that he needs to WARM the water before spraying...LOL! I can do it warm for them when I'm over (which is lots!)

Morgana, do you not have a problem with putting a plastic bottle in the microwave...or do you warm it then put it in the bottle...or is your spray bottle not plastic??? Lots of OR's. hehehe

Kristen,
Our sprayers all have plastic bottles. I put the bottle in - the sprayer part stays outside of the microwave (metal parts, ya know). If the sprayer bottle is too big for the microwave (such as my 2 gallon), I just put plastic milk jugs (1 gal) in there to heat up. It takes about 5-6 min to heat the gallon size.

Most of the sprayers we use are Ortho or Hudson - so the plastic is sturdy (for the pressure). We don't use flimsy non-pressurized hand-misters anymore. Too much squeezing of the trigger! **LOL** We gave up on them years ago when we only had half a dozen chams. With over 150 cages, I'd have a terminal carpel tunnel (sp) or something!!

But whatever kind of mister you have, you can use warmed water - just put a large glass of water in the microwave and heat it that way. Or use a lg container and a funnel to pour it into your mister. It's really not too difficult.

Thanks! I was just wondering if there was anything wrong about heating the plastic bottles in the microwave...I can see myself melting something that way, so that is why I asked just to be sure! hahaha
