Enclosure feedback

spranks Nov 02, 2003 08:44 PM

Would anybody like to give me feedback on my enclosure? I know many of the hardcores here swear by rubbermaids and not aquariums, but I'd like to have something that makes a decent display. Also, every caresheet I've read talks about using aquariums, so that can't be thaaaat bad.

I used astroturf from Home Depot for the bottom, and then put insulation around the sides (outside) and bottom to keep the heat in. I put some contact paper on the inside of the insulation so it would look nice. I have a 50 watt heat light and a heat pad on the same side as the heat pad. We'll see what my temperature equilibriates at, because I just plugged it all in. I have a piece of lexan plastic covering about 2/3 of the top on top of the screen, so we'll see what the humidity holds at as well.

I haven't knocked holes in the hides yet, but I went ahead and put them in there just to see what it looks like.

I won't be getting my snake for probably like a week or so, but I wanted to go ahead and get this all set up and working before I got one.

So I'll just ask: What's the temperature range? Because for all we know, it could be 150F on on end and -30F on the other end.

Kind of extreme, but we need to know this stuff.

And astroturf sucks. Lots of people use it, and I don't know why.

I was advised to use astroturf because I heard that other substrates can be harder to clean and possibly lead to respitory infections. I really didn't want to use newspaper.

You mean I don't want a temperature gradient of 140 to -30?

Like I said, I just plugged it in and it's up to 85 on the hot side. I'll have to see what temp it stops at. Once the temp settles, I'll pop the thermometer over on the cool side and see what it is over there.

Ha ha, no, not preferrably!!

90-92F hot side/spot and 80-84F on the cool side. Down to 78F at night on the cool end is ok.

Get a digital. Six to ten bucks at Walmart/Target/KMart. You can put the outdoor probe on one end and the thermometer itself on the other. And it'll be more accurate.

So much for aquariums not holding heat. I've been running my heat pad and light for about 2 hours, and my warm side is up to 98. The humidity's a bit down, as expected. I'll try to make a couple of modifications when I get a chance.

I want my humidity to be at about 60% right?

60's good thats what mines at
just lift ur light a little higher off the tank and that will lower the temp. i'm glad to see ur doing this the proper way and setting the cage up B4!!!! u get the snake because soooo many people don't do that. good luck
