how old are my babies??

nancyjo Nov 02, 2003 09:50 PM

O.K. I recieved two new babies, donated from a student..I am a fourth grade teacher... one is smaller and supposedly the male he is about 4-5 inches nose to tip of tail. the female is about 6-7 inches long, nose to tip of tail. I took them to a pet store and asked a guy ( who was recommended, because of his familarity to dragons..he says he has two) he was 100 percent sure of their sex and said that the male is 3 months old and the female 4 months old. Does this sound right?? He also said to only dust my crickets once a week. Is this right?? Also is their a way to sex them at this age. he said he could tell by their head shape.

There's no way to tell the age of a dragon by it's length. There are too many variables ie; how it has been cared for, what it was fed, proper lighting, how much it has been fed etc.
That being said, unless they were poorly cared for, I think they are much younger. My hatchlings were 4" out of the egg.
Male and females do have slightly different head shapes (male is more arrow like), but being so little, I kind of have my doubts.
Basically, I think he was trying to be impressive.
Small dragons should have their crickets dusted daily with a multi-vitamin dusting once a week.

It's hard to sex small dragons, though it can be done. Even seasoned breeders can be mistaken at this size.

The best thing to do would be to check out some care sheets and/or buy a bearded dragon care book.
www.beautifuldragons.com has an excellant site, as does www.beginnersbasics.com.

Here's a link with a sexing pic.

I agree, being that small they were either extremely miscared for or they are much younger. I have one baby that was born on Aug 25th which makes him 2 months and 1 week old and it is just a shade over 10 inches long already.

Ok , thanks for all the info!! You have confused me a little on the dusting, what is once a week and what is daily? Thanks

Once a day with the clacium and once a week with the vitamin suppliment.

Thank you. I have heard mention - "repcal" by tetra - is this the calcium, if it is what do you recommend for multi-vitamin?

Ah! sorry, I forgot a comma in the sentence that confused you.
Beginnersbasics gave you correct info...
