New PowerSun bulb design... Warning!!!!!!!!!!!

Joel R Nov 02, 2003 09:51 PM

Hey all, I just want to pass this on. I know some of us have gotten comfortable with our setups and some of us have gotten used to IR. Temp guns, etc. So I here it goes.

PowerSun has changed their bulbs yet again, The new 100wt. Flood bulb is now smaller in size.

Now, you would think it would be cooler than the larger one,, Well WRONG!!! That's what I thought so I switched my new (smaller) bulb with my 3 month old (larger) one.
Well, the old one was over a 20L. and the Basking temp was 108.
I put the new (smaller) bulb in it's place and went about my business setting up the new cage for BB.
I checked the temp about 1hr after I had put the new bulb in and the temp was 125!!!!!!!!!!
I know the old one is not cooler because of age, it's been there since it was new and has had the same temp.

In any case,, it's just a reminder to keep an eye on those temps when you replace those (ever so changing style) bulbs!

Later.

Nice to have met you too. I tell you, the shows are so much more fun now. The last 2 years where just go & buy, buy, buy, then leave. lol

I spent the first hour or 2 talking & meeting several people who I have only talked to either by phone or e-mail. Much less stressful this way too. lol

Anyway,, those temps where taken from the same distance. It is aprox. 11 - 14" from the bulb. Another observation with the new smaller style bulb is,, it's not a bright as the old one either. So, it's hotter but not a bright. They are working against our goal. lol Someone needs to call Zoomed.

To even stir up the pot some more,,, there is also another style bulb out there. Yes it's still a 100wt. Flood PowerSun but the surface is dimpled and clear. It looks just like a normal flood light you would use in your back yard. It is much brighter & whiter than the smooth frosted bulbs. My neighbor bought one in Daytona from the Zoomed table. I thought at first that it had been switched with a "spot" bulb or something but I have been told that Zoomed is sending that style bulb out as replacements (if yours burns out before the warranty).
I'm guessing that the ones we are buying now, are older stock that has to be moved out before the even newer ones are put out.

Okay, I hope that all makes sense.

I've been getting these smaller zoomeds for about 5 months now from reptiledirect.com. Good thing is, I still have the ones I bought 5 months ago, and they are still workin. The first time I got them I thought they sent spot bulbs instead. HHMM Maybe the spots don't sell so they printed the word flood on them and shipped them out J/K Just a thought/joke. No, but I use zoomed exclusively now for MVB and find them just to be a better bulb, and an easy company to work with if you do need a replacement. I acctually like the smaller design better then when they were big. They seem a lot more sturdier now, just seems to be the case as they've been lasting longer, and i even dropped the dome once or twice which is a killer when it's holding a 34 dollar bulb, lol..
