Switching beardies onto pellets

JLJ2018 Nov 02, 2003 10:16 PM

If I get a hatchling (or any size BD for that matter)...how hard is it to switch them to pellets instead of just crickets? I've read that sometimes it's a tough thing to do. I'm sure all the reptile stores around here are feeding only crickets because they feed their snakes live mice and I've had a few problems switching snakes to frozen.

It is always easier to buy a BD that is already eating pellets, but it is not impossible to switch over an older dragon. It can be frustrating for a while, but you just keep offering them and eventually they will eat them. You can not expect an older dragon to quit crickets "cold turkey" though. You will be feeding crix until the switch is complete.

It varies from one dragon to the other. Some dragons like the pellets, and some won't touch them.

When my dragon was 5 or 6 months old I started switching him over to pellets and greens. After a while he started eating the pellets but he never really loved them. He liked greens much more. So he continued to grow, but his growth rate definately slowed down. After a few months he appeared to be really tired of pellets and he wasn't eating them anymore. I went back to crickets and veggies and he started pigging out again, and grew to 18" long and 500 grams.

This is just my experience, and you may have better luck with the pellets. But me, I prefer watching my beardie happily devour dozens of large crickets.

I like to know that my babies make the trip safely and be sure to keep us updated on his progress
