Hibernation in a mini fridge

Ackbarred1 Nov 02, 2003 10:40 PM

Hi! its my first time attemping hibernation for my three collards. I have read multiple places about using a mini fridge for this. I recently purchased a 1.8 cubic foot mini fridge with adjustable thermostat. Does fresh air circulate so they wont suffocate. I was wondering if they will suffocate in there, or am i to leave it cracked. Im a little nervous to try it. Any comments of experience on the this is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Make for certain, you are able to set the fridge on the highest setting, and are able to get a temp that is around 45 F. With some small refridgerators this is just not possible....you will then have to keep the door propped open.

In my fridge, I am able to maintain 45...so I keep the door closed. I try to make it down once a day, just to open and close the door a couple times. Something very important to consider is moisture. It will become very dry, with the cool dry conditions. Keep a dish of water in there, and also try to manually give your lizards some water to drink.

I use the small plastic Sterilite containers, adn add about 2 mls of water to all the four corners...these corners are actually recessions in the box.

I have kept them this way for upwards of 4 months.
