Well.... no one way is truly full proof. Females tend to be larger than the males, the males call but the females can also vocalize. It doesn't sound the same but I can imagin it being a bit confusing. Also, durring breeding season, sexually mature males will get nuptual pads wich appear as dark, rough patches on the "thumb" area of the front feet.

I have heard that females are larger and have rougher skin. I'm not sure if this is 100% true or not tho. I have also heard that they are darker, which doesn't seem like the best method to determine sex. But the best way of sexing them as was metioned already is the nuptial pads!

Good luck

how can i tell by the nuptial pads?

i have 2 FBTs, one is green & one is brown, both with an orange belly...the brown one is bigger in size and seems to have bumpier skin than the green one... i haven't looked at the pads yet, but will check it out on thursday when i move them into the new home that i bought for them

thanks!

Nuptual pads will be on the "thumbs" of the front feet and will look like dark, rough patches. They are almost unmistakeable once you see them. It almost looks like a clump of dirt stuck to the toads foot, only it doesn't rinse off.

Only the male will have nuptual pads. The females "thumbs" will look normal while the males will have the pads. Keep in mind though that the pads are not visible all the time. They appear when the male is ready to mate. So just because there may not be any nuptual pads visible right now, doesn't mean that they couldn't show up later.

i'm a lab tech, and i work for a guy who's specialty is bombina orientalis (FBTs from asia). as i understand it, the females do not vocalize, attempt amplexus with other toads (grasping for mating), or have nuptual (sp?) pads. the most reliable physical trait are actually the forearms. males have large forearms, and a muscular 'chest,' which they use when mating with females, to hold on for hours while she hops around. though you can't see the difference in muscle size (without dissecting), you can feel it when the toad is trying to escape from your hand- males have much stronger arms. females have relatively skinny arms. there is no difference in color between the sexes. females appear more round/bloated when egg-laden, though they are not really larger per se.
