can you paint Melamine?

while you "could paint it " the likely hood of the paint staying on it w/o easily scratching off is very low due to the smooth slick surface of it . If you would liek to try it i would suggest using a oil based spray paint as a latex would easily be scratched even by finger nails , or bumping it with objects that are hard

I built a melamine cage many years ago for some desert dweller. Later I wanted to put Jamaican Anoles in it and have a misting system. I tried a lot of different stuff but ultimately had to go with a spray on "flash" primer of some sort. I believe it was used for glass. I then put on several thick coats of water-based epoxy.

More trouble than it was worth. Today I'd use contact paper.
