Help on diet of B/W tegu!

crested12 Nov 02, 2003 11:43 PM

I work at a pet shop that specializes in reptiles and we recently aquired a full grown female Argentine B/W tegu. She seems pretty well but i was worried about her diet. THey have been feeding her 5 or 6 mice a week. thats all. I have been reading and i read that their diet needs to be a lot more varied. What fruits/veggies do y'all feed? are scrambled eggs ok? super worms? crickets? thanks in advance for the help.. _Ben

try some Kiwii , banna, mango, apricots. If she wont eat the fruit try boioling an egg (Cooked eggs dont have parisites), Then blending it in a blender- or a food processor with water to thin out the egg. Then dip the fruit in it to sent the fruit with the eggs. I also feed got loaded dusted kingmeal worms. Russ

My favorite diet for my tegu so far consists of the following:

3 prts. Lean Ground Turkey
1 prt. Pureed Bannanas and Strawberries
1/4 prt. Calcium/Bone Meal

I also feed superworms frequently. Regarding the mice, i would try to feed them less often. theyre tasty, but also higher in fat than the turkey...

Ian, Mice and rats are not high in fat. The sdz mixture is 90 grams of bone meal to 10lbs of turkey, and one centurme Vit. 3 parts to 1/4 is not even close , considering 90 grams is 3.2 ozs.so 3.2 ozs to 10 lbs of turkey is not 3 to 1/4 part.Thats like 50x`s the recomended amount of bone meal.I think that would cause serious problems. I Also hope your not using Mineral All in stead of bone meal . Supplkaments are not bone meal . Bone meal is Gounded up bones ,Rodents have bones. I found that mixed chunks of fruit works better than blended fuits . The way I do fruit now is in my previs post. Thanks Russ

Whole prey of any kind (rodent or bird) is healthier, more natural and always a better choice for your pet then any concoction that any human could come up with...

Yes pinkies are not good as a staple food source.I still think you should talk to a vet about what to much bone meal could do to your tegus health, before you do this . RUss

....or were you just stating that its not a proper subsitute for bone meal? I've been supplementing with Miner-All so I'm curious to know if you have a contray opinion.

Thanks....MAP
