Paper Towel Substrate

ByRandom Nov 03, 2003 12:54 AM

Okay, Okay. I'm so freaked out about this substrate thing that even after only 2 hours of sleep today (Sunday), I am still awake at 1 AM waiting for my dad to come home so he can buy me some paper towels, which he wont, but all you can do is try, right?

After the first scare, I don't want this baby dying of something I did. I'm just going to keep it on paper towels until it is old enough for my "sand" type substrate. I'm so worried about this little guy.....

paper towels are the best substrate for a baby leo. Mine is only about two months old and in his hide box the substrate is paper towels that I mist everyday or so and for the substrate in the cage I have that cage carpet stuff which I think is really good because I will never have to worry about him getting an impaction or about changing out the sand every so often. I just take out the carpet and spray it down with sanitizer. Anyways I just thought I would share that bit of info.

Hi

Tell your dad that you need two rolls of paper towels for a project at school and have a good idea for that project incase he asks. Also fill in your friends he may come in contact with about your paper towel sceam.

Hey, if all else fails, ask a friend if they can give you one from there house.

He'd get them any time, but he's been at work since like 8 Sunday morning. And now it's Monday, and is 1:30 in the morning. He needs to hurry up and get home, I'm worried about him and the gecko.

Hi

Can you call your dad on a cell phone to see if he is okay?.

Glad to see that I'am not the only one up late, it's 2:30 a.m.

No, he's stupid and never takes it.

I have a quesiton about quartining. As everybody should know, I got a small leo today at petco. I have a 10G about a foot or so away from my 20G that has my normals in it. Is that really "quaratining"? Do they have to come into physical contact to catch stuff?

Hi

I have heard of people on this forum quarantining there new gecko in a tank and in a seperate room from were they have there healthy ones, I have also heard some keeping there new gecko on the other side of there rooms for lack of space in another room.

p.s. It looks like you will have to turn your dad's cell on and hide it in something he carries to work with him everyday and then take it out when he gets home and recharge it.

Yeah, I know. What are the warning signs of coccidia so I will know if my guy has it or not? Thanks for being a night owl with me!

Hi

I found a nice site that seems to really explain what coccidia is. Here is some of the paragraph headings: What on Earth are Coddidia?, Where do Coccidia Come From?, What Happens Inside the Host?, How Are Coccidia Detected?, How is Coddidiosis Treated? and Can People or Other Pets Become Infected.

Just go to the following site and don't pick one of the choice on the left, just schroll down the page to read.

I keep my quarantines in another room on another floor of the house. That way, I don't mix up any water bottles or supplies, and they also get their own sink to wash their stuff in. But I've also verified that my quarantines have coccidia so I have to be that cautious.

Just make sure you take care of your normals first when it comes to feeding and cleaning the cage before you take care of the new leo. If you can get a fecal done, that would be even better. Certain parasites, including coccidia, can be present without causing any symptoms.

Just use some newspaper until you can get some paper towels. I use it in about half of my cages. It has worked very well for me, and only needs to be changed every 2-3 days, just like paper towels. I pick up a few classified ads while I’m at the store, and it will last me a week.
And another thought: no substrate would be better than a granulated one. It’s not very hard to spot clean for one or two leos.
Hope I don’t sound harsh, it just sounded like you were stressing over nothing. Best of luck, and let me know if you have any more questions.
