Feeding during Vacation

bgkast Nov 03, 2003 02:17 AM

What do you guys do with you darts when you are gone on vacation? I have heard you can put a fresh FF culture in the vivarium and just allow the flies to breed and crawl out while you are gone. I will be gone for 9 days, and need to find some way to keep my frogs fed. Thanks for any help.

THat is somehting that you can do. but remember 1 thing, you do not want the jar to be completly open. I would recommend putting a small hole in the lid of the jar that the flies can escape from.

If you leave the jar completly open your darts will climb insid ethe jar. This happened to me once. When i came home my frog was dead.

JUST A WORD OF CAUTION!!!!

I've had to use this method and it works fine, just make sure you do as the previous post suggests and cut just a small enough hole in the lid for the flies to get out and keep the darts out of the culture. Use a culture that has pupae and instars formed. Also, you might want to use an opaque container for your culture, or even wrap up the outside with tape to create a visual barrier. This way, your frogs won't spend most of the nine days you're gone shooting their tongues in vain at flies on the inside of the container Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help. Hah...Good point about not using a clear container.
