HELP!!!! PLEASE!!!!

jag Nov 03, 2003 09:54 AM

OK well to fill you in.

Winky shed lastnight.... no problem.
Well this morning he waws making a lot of noise so I got up and watched him and noticed he was going to the restroom. He had an upset stomach. He usually does after he eats his shed. I dont know why. Well I took his humid hide out since he uses that to poop on and I noticed that he vomited all over the place too. So I cleaned up his tank and went to pull him out so i can clean him up too and I noticed that he had a bright red bag of something hanging out from were he uses the restroom. He was crying (making noise) like it hurt him for me to pick him up and he never does that. I tried to soak it, thinking that it will go back in and nothing. I called the vet and they cant get us in until Wednesday at 2pm. Thats the closet vet to us unless we drive really far away. I have been watching him for an hour now and he chewed off that bag what they hell is it nothing is coming out of him now at all what happend what do I do?

PLease Help
Alicia

SOunds like he had a prolasped hemipene. I have seen a few lizards expose their hemipenes while defacating. Never heard of a male chewing it off though. Thats kind of strange. I have seen where a male had a hemipene prolasped and after a week or so it dried up and fell off. If it was one of his hemipenes he most likely still has the other. What sort of substrate is this guy on?

He is on papertowels. Never been on anythign else, but tiles on an occasion. I dont belive it is his man hood I think it is his Coalate (Sp).

Well like most reptiles he has two manhoods! Could have been one of them. Or like you said possibly his colon. Thats unlikely though. Better get him to the vet.

This is a silly question but i gotta know.......ummmmmmmm when you say a gecko has two hemipenines(sp?) are you referring to the actual penis or testicles?

Hi

This is very serious, you call that vet. back that said that they couldn't get you in until Wed. and tell them he need to come in NOW. I don't know if I will spell this right but that it is a hemipeniel prolampse sticking out, in otherwords, that is something that belongs inside of his body and not on the outside. The fact that he chew it off isn't good at all.

Keep that area moist and he has to go to the vet. ASAP.

Hi

One more thing, I knew of someone else this happened to and I told them to keep it moist and get the gecko to the vet. that day and to tell the vet. it was an emergencey and had to come in. Well the vet. had tried to do his best to get it back in and put a couple of stitches in there to keep it from coming back out, but the vet.s office was closed that night had they hadn't gotten it in until that morning.

Well to make a long story short, it was to late and they lost the gecko, no kidding.

I know how serious it is, but I believe it is his coalate (its what the feces I belive passes through before they use the restroom). I contacted another vet and waiting to hear back form him.

I dont believe it is the Hemipenes, because it doenst look like one that I have seen pics of and so forth. It looks like a waterballon thats filled with water. The hemipens looks like meat and so forth like on this page. Looks nothing like that at all. But Im not a vet either.

Thanks for all the info though

Hi

I'am just saying this in good spirit, and trying to help.

I found another page of Melissa Kaplains on the subject and maybe you might take a look at it while you waite for the vet. to call.

Then choose prolapse.

p.s. I hope your little one will be just fine

Hi Alicia

I went and read that page you mentioned and saw the picture of it and you mentioned that it didn't look like that and more like a clear balloon type thing filled with liquid, then I think you could be right.

If it winds up to be truely that, then I will apologize now.

Take Care, TLB
p.s. no hard feeling I hope.

jag Nov 03, 2003 03:21 PM

No hard feelings.

I talked to a major vet in Berkely...
He had this to say

What you describe is a prolaspsed cloaca, the rectal area of a reptile.
Until he can be sen by a vet, you should keep him on water moistened paper toweling, and place K/Y Jelly twice daily over the site.

So this is what I am doing. I also have to keep an eye on his feces for blood. I guess that the prolapse happends also when they strain if they have a huge turd. So we shall see.

I hope he will be ok... he is my baby.
