Tofu moves out

wendi Nov 03, 2003 10:26 AM

We decided to bite the bullet and build a shed for Tofu's pleasure this fall. At 7 yrs old he was a bit old to still be living at home. He seems to have adjusted to his new digs well, and moves in and out of the shed as he desires. I do still check on him frequently just to be sure he uses it when the weather is cool. (It is still new to him, after all, and old habits are hard to break) Of course there are some tweakings that need to be done, but they can wait until the spring.

Here's a couple of suggestions...
Cut the door in half (like the old barn doors) to add to the insulation or cut a smaller door next to the big doors.

Yep, that one of the things I was referring to as the other stuff that needs to be done. I like the idea of the half doors. At least he's now out of our house, and the shower curtain preserves the indoor temp pretty well for a temporary measure.

I never thought of it like that before. It's such a
relief when they're out of the house. Now it's REALLY
like having a mini-rhino or horse with his own zoo
enclosure! I put up hooks to hang a broom and dustpan
for clean up and sweeping. On the shelf I keep paper
towels and plastic bags. Good deal for Tofu! niki

We haven't gotten around to shelves or hooks, but purposely built an 8x10 shed to allow extra room for storage. It was supposed to be for our stuff (no chemicals), but Tofu's stuff seems to have taken over. Plus there is a chair in there for "Tofu watching." My son especially seems to like to sit out there and be alone. Ah, teenagers. No matter, Tofu likes the company.

I haven't settled on any one source since this will be my first winter heating the shed. I've still got the ceramic heaters set up for mild cool weather, and as supplemental heat at night; there's a radiator heater hooked up; and an additional radiant heater with fan for colder days. So far the shed seems to be well insulated enough to not really need all of that fire power, but I wanted to be sure.
