The difference between Black and White?

E&T May 30, 2003 09:03 AM

OK, so I know the taxonomic and geographic differences in Blackthroats and Whitethroats but I have noticed in the classifed sections alot of people offering "true whitethroats" and alot of Blackthroat adds. What is the difference? Some of the adds for true whitethroats have pics of the monitors with black coloration on the throat! How can a person be sure that he is getting a true whitethroat and not just a nice example of a blackthroat? What is the trait or characteristic that will separate the two species?

The BT has 4-5 rows of large whitish or yellowish spots (usually a dark throat). The WT has bands or rows of very small spots, are light throated usually. The best examples are the banded cape like this young male here.

The throat and it is pretty easy to see the difference. Pattern, body color, shape, and size are the main things. The throat color can go either way.

The thing you would want to do is study a ionidesi, albig, and a banded cape. Note the differences with them and you'll see for yourself. After awhile you'll be able to spot a cross from a normal as well.

Good luck
