Simple question,re:Baby Boxers and Red Ear Slider

kulkat Nov 03, 2003 11:54 AM

I have 2 year old Baby Box Turtles, which I raised from eggs.
My daughter also has a Red Eared Slider, which is about the same size as the Boxers, which she received over the summer from a neighbor who's rather give their turtle to the "turtle family" in the neighborhood. Now the 'RES' is currently living the 'bad' way, thru one of those 'turtle lagoons'. Only temporary till I figure out the best way to house him in my daughters room (I have too many frogs/turtles/lizard in my living room as it is).
Twice we have placed the RES in with my baby box turtles, since they have the Powersun Active UV heat light in there. They all get along, and the RES just digs himself into the dirt like the others. We only leave him in there for the day, just to get the UV benefits. He also goes out in the natural sunlight occasionaly. Question is, are they emitting anything "dangerous" to each other by exposing themselves to one another?

There is the possiblity that the turtles might pass diseases on to each other but this is not why i would condemn this keeping stategy.
The only real danger is dehydration for the RES. You could tax his kidneys very seriously if you keep up this practice for very long. Plus, as i am sure you know, RES cannot swallow food without the help of water so he cannot eat which he is in with the box turtles. This is a bad situation. you need to get him to a tank with a few inches of water and a basking spot and hide as soon as possible.
