new eastern collared lizard - hiding space?

jakeleolizard Nov 03, 2003 12:16 PM

Hi all,

I just got an Eastern Collared Lizard last week and man, do I really like him. He has been great. Very active and I can even hold him already and if he jumps from my hand, all I have to do is place my hand by him and he just hops back on my hand... very cool!!

Anyhoo... I was wondering if Collared's aren't too much into hiding... I have two hiding spaces for him... half logs... they are both different sizes and also one in the warm part of tank and one in the cool part of tank... and he doesn't seem to hide in them... he seems content... just seems odd that he doesn't hide... I have lots of things for him to climb on... so maybe that is why... I dunno... just thought I would ask...

Also... temps... I have read differing temp suggestions... but I have gone with Petsmart's... so I have 115 right under basking light... then below that on the bottom of the tank I have an undertank pad that heats a peice of slate and that is about 95... then on the other side of the tank it is only 75-80 during the day... and at night... it is about 70-75... sound good?

Thanks!

temps sound good. Usually they will stay out in the open during the day to bask and hunt for food and then retire to the hide spots at night when the lights go out.

80 - 90's And to tell ya the truth they like to hide under rocks. But make sure they are secure. They can dig and shift them, and can be squashed ! It has happened to people on this forum, very sad !

Anyway if you had a rock leaning on another rock, and leave a space under, he will go right in their. And yes, they are awesome little guys, fun and friendly ! post a pic of your new friend, Eve

Does anyone keep their temp a little warmer than 105? I have read different ranges... he seems to like the heat... I have one of those reptile hammocks about 4-5 inches under it and he will lay there for a little bit and then move around for a little bit... or he will lay on his warm rock which is about 6-7 inches under the hammock... that is about 95-100. I hear they like it hot... but I also don't want to cook him... although, he has a nicer cool area on the other side....

then again, I have two females with scars on their backs...they liked it too I guess LOL. With about 2 years of growing, the scars are nearly invisible. I would stay below 110 to play it safe.
