Uromastyx Vet?

jimnyc Nov 03, 2003 03:43 PM

My 1 year old Uro has developed a bit of a growth on his lower lip, sorta looks like dirt, but is definitely now a part of him.

I want to bring him to a vet to have it looked at/removed.

Can anyone recommend a vet in the White Plains, NY area? Or does anyone know of a website that may list the various vets by area?

Thanks!

i would use your local phone book, ask them if they treat lizarss then ask them if they know the breed uromastyx, most vets are clueless but the ones that know usally are real reptile vets!!!! good luck!

Ask the local herp shop. They depend on having a good vet to go to.

Check out www.herpvetconnection.com/ and definately call the vet first. These vets, I believe, are submitted and don't necessarily know about uromastyx. I found mine through it and she's great.
Good luck.

Thanks for everyone's advice, I found a vet and he went for his visit this morning. I'm just curious to hear everyone's thoughts on what I was told.

After opening the box upon arrival the "growth" was gone! There was a bit of blood on his lip and the growth was on the floor of the box. The vet looked at it and said he thinks it was more or less just a scab. He cleaned the blood off and noticed a little white thing sticking out of his mouth, sort of like a splinter. He used his tweezers and removed it. It turned out to be a whole section of his teeth! It was about 1/2 an inch long and came out of his mouth very easily. More blood ensued, but not a huge amount, and then he cortorized the bloody area.

He said this is normal, that lizards will shed their teeth. I've never heard of this, but thats why I'm not the vet! He said when the row started coming out that it probably cut him in the front of his mouth causing the growth. When the growth fell off the tooth was now visible.

I'll constatntly monitor him now for blood, activity and eating habits. But has anyone seen this before or can offer some advice?

Thanks!

-Jim
