I have heard that these lines indicate stress. I thought that this might be true because they come and go. If they aren't for stress what are they for?

They can also mean they are not warm enough or not enough lighting, etc. It all kind of boils down to stress though. I would first look at temps.
Your basking temps should be 100 for adults or 110 for youngsters.
The cool end should be upper 70's to lower 80's (higher end for babies)
If you have room with the temps, add another fluorescent strip. As long as you don't go over the temps, you can't get too much light. They love the light.
I guess I should first mention, First meet UVB needs, then go for more light.
Give it a shot, you may be surprised.
