Hey there.
I just found this web site. I never would have guessed that there was such a large and active community here on the net for reptiles and torts. I have had off and on all sorts of reptiles, but Torts and turtles have always been my favorites. Right now I really like the crested geckos as well.
Here is my question. I want to breed some torts. I just love having them around. I know that there are many species out there that the importation is being stopped or has stopped, and may disapear from the average pet market if we are not careful. My question is where is the demand?
I love the looks of the leopards and stars...and I know that the looks prob sell alot of torts...so is this somewhere to start breeding? Havent they pretty well stopped importing these? But with the size that they are capable of reaching, is this a species that is better left not breed in any real numbers because most will fall into the hands of people that can not properly care for them as they get older and bigger?
I know there are people trying to breed russians...but when you can buy them everywhere for 40.00 a piece, is this a good place to start? It will be hard to compete selling CB if they are importing thousands of WC with no sight of slowing down.
I am an experianced breeder...mostly of lizards and turtles (many many many turtles...hahaha....many)....I am not looking ot make a fast buck...I was in the Marine Corps and had to get rid of all my reptile friends when I went to Japan. What I want to do is breed so that there is an availability for future hobyist to enjoy the animals as much as we do, and cut down on the loss in the wild.
Any thoughts, and any other groups or web sites I should know about? Thanks
