vet prescribed pogo with liquid albon....HELP! questions I need to know...

pogo_the_dragon Nov 03, 2003 08:23 PM

I will probably start treatment tomorrow....the vet prescribed a "very small diluted dose" and said he is to take it daily for 7 days. Is this the typical timeframe for ALBON...He said after the 7th day he wants a fecal done 3 weeks later to see if the levels dropped off! So if I start treatment tomorrow what do I need to do...the vet sent me instructions in the mail but he thankfully already admitted not medicating too many beardies so I need all the help I can get...What can I expect pogo to go through....Every and anything is helpful....DETAILS WELCOME!!! Want to get this right the first time so I can get my buddy up and running healthy again!!!

If I recall correctly, my expierence with albon was a 14 day treatment with a second check anytime after the treatment is done. Weather it's the next day or two weeks later. Also, why would it be diluted? I'd imagine diluting would mean you just have to get your dragon to drink that much more medicine, and trust me, it's not always easy to get even a little down.

The vet may have said diluted! I could be wrong...Pogo is only a 10 gram baby so he said he didn't want to overdue it....maybe he meant it's just a small small dose.....

Mine were on a 3 days on 3 days off treatment and it was for 3 weeks. Then another fecal check. Just be sure to buy some probiotics to help restore the good gut flora and keep him well hydrated. I used pedialite and acidophiliz in the evenings and the albon in the mornings. He may lose some of his appetite, others it doesn't faze at all. Poops might be runny.

Good luck to you

7-10 days straight is a common used method for dragons with slightly elevated coccidia loads that have not been treated before.

Other's prescribed routines:

3 days on 3 days off over 2-3 weeks or
3 days straight and alternating days for 2 weeks

It depends on the coccidia load, age and general health of the dragon.

Below is a link to a routine for support during treatment that we used and changed some to suit bearded dragons that was recommended by Roger Klingerberg to treat high resistant coccidia. We have also have used this support and cleaning methods alone to allow the dragons own immune system to handle lowering or ridding the dragon of coccidia.

IMO, the cleaning routine is key to ridding them the first round and preventing re-infection in the future. We now use this method on all the rehab dragons we get in and all of them no matter what age have come through treatment with little problems, even ones weighing less than yours.
