I use halogen bulbs but they are a lot cheaper then the zoomed kind. I get 75 watt GE Halogen bulbs at a walmart for a few of the tanks I use fluorescent uvb bulbs on. I do like the light/heat they give off more then incandescence, and they seem to last a lot longer, or are at least sturdier. I dropped the dome a few times and the bulbs where fine. I know if it was a regular bulb it would have blown. Like the hundreds that have in the past, lol. This maybe a way to save quite a few bucks rather then paying the extra money for a nice wrapper with pics of reptiles on them. Don't get me wrong I think zoomed uvb lights are the best you can get, but for just normal heating uses go with regular cheaper brands instead of reptile bulbs it saves money for the same light, and use

I've been using the Zoomed basking bulbs since they seem to put out more heat than the same wattage of other reptile brand name bulbs, but I would like to find something comparable in heat output/wattage of the zoomeds, just cheaper. I've tried to go the cheap route by going to walmart or yardbirds and picking up lights there, but I end up spending more money trying to get the temps to where I had them with the zoomed ones than if I were to just buy the zoomed ones. Like you said though they are fragile if you drop or bang the hood. Would a GE halogen bulb put out about the same amount of heat at the same distance in the same wattage bulb?

I have some problems with giving you an answer to your question. I never used the zoomed halogen bulbs so I can't compare them to how hot/bright my GE brand bulbs are. I do know that I went from using 100 watt incandescence down to 75 watt GE halogens to keep the basking temps in the right range. I also found that the 75 GE halogens were much brighter then the 100 watt incandescent. Sorry, but I can't compare to a bulb I never used before. I saw that zoomed started making halogens, and I bought the cheaper GE halogens right from the start. So I could not tell ya how they compare to zoomeds.
