Ornate and cactus

tps22 Nov 04, 2003 12:17 PM

I purchased a male Ornate a couple weeks back from Doug Dix, My Uro is doing great finially starting to really eat. I have noticed on alot of the cage images that people have cactus or other desertie plants in there cages. What kind of cactus or palnts can i put in the cage? Will the uro try to eat the cactus or get pricked from any of the pines?
Also I currently have him in a 30 gallon tank he is about 6 inches. Is this tank to small. I am in the process of building him something larger and only paln to keep him in the current tank for another couple months.
Thank you.

I don't know about what kind of cacti to put in the cage. But according to Doug Dix, his uro's love cactus pads. He gets the kind from the grocery store and peals the spikes off. He also says cactus pads are great to use for feeding if you are going to be gone for a few days. Just throw in a few cactus pads and they will stay fresh for a few days and the uro's can nibble away at them.

Where would you find them at the grocery store?

only a few grocery stores in my town. The cactus pads are in the produce section and are usually grouped with the other hispanic foods like the chilis and jalapenos. I don't know if you have a Win Co. or Food4Less in your town, but I've found cactus at both of these stores. Hope this helps.

You could try a local health food store that sells produce. Cactus is very good for us and for our reptiles. Call around and see what you can find.

Reptile Direct has them too under "new" products.
